Principal

Corey Jewel

I would like to welcome back the entire Lalor Secondary College community for the beginning of term 2. We were all lucky enough to enjoy some beautiful weather over the break, which shows few signs of letting up into the month of May. At the end of Term 1 the Progress Reports for all students were completed and made available to families and students for review. If you have not viewed your child’s report, please log into Compass as these reports remain available for review while your child is enrolled at the college. Student managers are currently going through the data from those reports and will be contacting parents via letter for those students who are not meeting the academic requirements of Lalor Secondary College. Students who have performed at the highest level will be recognised at upcoming year level assemblies and are to be congratulated on an excellent start to the year.

ANZAC Day

The school commemorated ANZAC day last week on Thursday the 24th of April with our Junior leaders carrying out a commemorative ceremony for the entire school. The term “ANZAC” was the name given to a combined force of the First Australian Imperial Force and New Zealand Army troops who landed on Turkey’s Gallipoli Peninsula at around dawn on Sunday, the 25th day of April, 1915, barely nine months after the outbreak of World War I. Galvanised by the example of courage and sacrifice demonstrated on that bloody battlefield, on the 10th day of January 1916 a public meeting of Brisbane citizens voted unanimously to establish the ANZAC Day Commemoration Committee to lay the groundwork for a nationwide, solemn day of public remembrance on the first anniversary of the landings. On every 25th day of April for over 100 years, “ANZAC Day” has been observed in Australia and New Zealand, becoming an honoured and sacred institution along the way. I thank the entire school for their participation on this day and for honouring those that sacrificed so much for our way of life. I would like to specifically thank our student leaders Ajjar Saeed, Dame Manev, Amira Aman, and William Cody for their contributions during this service, and for Matthew Balassone our Music teacher for playing the Last Post and Reveille during the service.

Everyday Counts - The importance of regular school attendance.

At Lalor Secondary College, we prioritise regular school attendance. We will work with families to ensure students are in class with their peers and teachers and enjoying all the benefits that brings.

Attending school every day means experiencing what counts – the learning, friendship, fun and opportunities that can shape your child’s future.

Last year, students at our school missed on average 20 days of school. This equates to 1 whole term over the 6 years of secondary schooling.

We understand that there are times when your child will need to miss school but to ensure minimal disruption to their education, please consider scheduling family holidays or medical/dental appointments outside of school time. If your child is well enough to attend but is worried about friendships, schoolwork or exams, please encourage them to come to school. Avoiding school can make these feelings worse and can create a negative pattern of behaviour.

If your child is having difficulty attending school, talk to their teacher or student management team members about getting support.

We know that parents and carers can be juggling challenges daily to get your children to school. If your child must miss school, notify us as soon as possible via the general office so we can work together to support them.

Remember, Everyday Counts.

School Uniform Changes

As you may be aware, on 2nd of April 2025, the Minister for Education announced affordability changes to the Department of Education Student Dress Code policy. This change includes removing branding from shorts, pants, skirts, skorts, leggings and socks. This policy change will come into effect from 2026 for all Victorian government schools.

Before the end of 2025, the Lalor Secondary College school council will review our local student dress code policy and consult with the school community with a view to ensuring uniform affordability. Following the review and consultation process, the school council will update the local dress code to align with the department’s policy changes as required. Any change to this policy will be communicated to our school community.

Education Support Personnel Day

The crucial and diverse role of education support (ES) members in schools cannot be overstated. Teachers often express their reliance on ES colleagues, including office staff, maintenance personnel, library assistants, science and food service, classroom aides, allied health professionals, and many more. On Friday the 16th of May the Lalor Secondary College community will celebrate the work of all our ES members, and I encourage our entire community to say thank you to an ES member over the coming weeks for their contributions to our community.

Student Free Day – Curriculum Day

Students will not be required at school on Wednesday the 14th of May.

Once again, I thank the Lalor Secondary College school community for your ongoing support of your children and the school program and look forward to continuing the success achieved during first term.

Best regards,

Corey Jewell

College Principal.
