Seed to Snack! Where does our food come from?

This term, the Year 1 and 2 Community is focusing on the Design and Technology learning area. The curriculum for Design and Technology has four technology contexts. They are:

  • Engineering principles and systems

  • Food and fibre production

  • Food specialisations

  • Materials and technologies specialisations

The Year 1 and 2 students are focusing on food and fibre production and food specialisations. They are learning about where our food comes from and coming to understandings about:

  • How our food gets from farm to table

  • How food is selected and prepared

  • How the food we select meets our needs and

  • The design process.

Earlier in the term, the students planted vegetables to watch how plants grow from a seedling into food. 

The students are now regularly taking care of their class gardens. They have made sure they are in the sun and are getting watered. 

 

At the end of the term, when the plants are fully grown, the students will be preparing a morning tea for the school staff. We can’t wait to see what they make.
