Halloween Disco
The posters - winners to be announced at next assembly. Shout out to all classes (and teachers) for the time and effort put into all of these!

Getting ready - PA and volunteer helpers, thank you! Set up and pack up are always big jobs, so thanks to all who raided our PA shed, came early, stayed late. The hall looked fantastic!

Let the dancing begin!
KPop Demon Hunters definitely a re-occurring winner of the night.
Conga lines also for the win.
Clancy 3C "The best thing about the Halloween disco was the pizza and cordial. I dressed up as a blow up alien. I had a lot of fun with my friends."
Louis P (Prep C) "I dressed up as a skeleton. We did dancing and we ate pizza. It was fun getting dressed up."
Ruby (2S) "I dressed up as Draculara. There were lots of fun costumes and lots of amazing choices for what people dressed up as. I liked seeing how some people did duos like me and my friend Ava. She came as as Luguna from Monster High. There were also lots of great songs and I danced my heart out when the Kpop demon hunters songs played"
Ned (2S) "Pizza was the highlight of the Halloween disco for me. I also liked the dancing. I liked hanging out with my friends. I liked my friends' costumes too."

Prep
English: We've been diving into stories to uncover what makes them shine, exploring how characters, settings and structure bring tales to life so that we can create our own stories with our buddies.
Maths: We are continuing to building number magic with “Friends to 10” and beyond so students move to automaticity in recognising these number facts. In the coming weeks we are spotting patterns, shapes and directions in our world, honing our measuring, comparing and investigating through hands-on fun.
Inquiry: With a STEAM focus this term, we are becoming inventors and designers, building, testing and improving amazing cardboard creations working towards building our own Not-a-Box constructions.
PMP: We love the chance for Moving, jumping and balancing each week to build stronger bodies coordination, confidence and teamwork with our Buddies.

Not a box: STEAM studies
Taking inspiration from the book Not a Box, Prep students have been using their imaginations to see what they can make with carboard boxes. Along the way they have discovered various engineering concepts, the names of components for building machines, and have been sharing ideas in a collaborative manner.
Chloe "We were using our imagination. We were given some cardboard and we made some shapes out of them and we drew a picture of what we thought we could make. Me and Sebastian drew a picture of a boat and then we shared our ideas with the class. "

Grade 1: We've been busy revising maths concepts focusing on place value and the four operations through our Daily 5 maths retrieval curriculum; consolidating the codes and applying it to our spelling of new and known words; exploring procedural texts and enjoying weekly choir time, preparing for our term's performances.
If you need to brush up on your sound codes, and want to help your child consolidate, go to http://Code Demo PhOrMeS for a demonstration.

An array is a way to represent multiplication. Grade 1 students explored arrays this week. Here is what they had to say:
Genna 1M "We had to make buildings about numbers. Ms M gave us groups of numbers and we had to make the buildings. The buildings were also arrays."
Sam 1M "We were making a city out of buildings using arrays. We had to make some even groups. We use arrays for multiplication. We also had to write a number sentence and the groups we were showing in our building."
Grade 2: Maths revision this past two weeks has focused on reading and recognising larger numbers according to place value, and number fact recall for the four operations. We have been analysing worded problems and are loving our daily maths retrieval, using maths mentals to revisit taught concepts to help shift our knowledge and understanding from our short to long term memory. Grade 1 and 2 have begun learning about sustainable practices through our 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' unit and have this week loved writing Halloween inspired narratives.
Noah (2S) "In maths we made arrays using counters. We use them for multiplication. You put your groups in a row and then you can see what your multiplication looks like."

Narrative writing
What would happen if you came across a spooky house? Grade 2 students workshopped ideas, planning characters and structure and used descriptive language to enhance the spookiness of their stories - a perfect writing project for Halloween.
Hunter and Michi "It started with us seeing a picture of a spooky house and then we had to do a plan. We had to describe the house and the person in the house. We had to describe what it sounded like, looked like, and felt like. We used big teacher paper because we needed to write a lot. After we used the big pieces of paper we wrote our sentences with some other paper and we will scan it and check it."
Hunter - "My story was about an old lady's haunted house. The old lady was away that night. I went into the house."
Michi - "My story was about a kid going into a haunted house. The house was empty but it was filled with lots of weird creatures."
Fairy Bread Fractions and Communication
Grade 2 are working on communication and fractions (simultaneously). Using Fairy Bread, students work on speaking and listening skills with a partner, turn taking, giving and receiving instructions and working as part of a team. Once created, the fairy bread is then divided into parts to connect to the current grade 2 focus in maths on fractions (a real life application with a delicious twist).

Grades 3 and 4
The Hub are pumped to be writing narratives over the next few weeks, analysing and reading fantastic short story mentors and revisiting the structure who, wanted to, but, so, then to create a story. Our next step is to build our descriptive vocabulary, expanding and connecting sentences using conjunctions and connectives.
In Mathematics, students continue to persist with daily direct instruction of a spiralled Maths curriculum, problem solving and learning from mistakes through the JEMM program. Additionally, Grade 3 are exploring time (reading an analogue watch to the minute is still an important skill in our curriculum!) and Grade 4 are developing an understanding of chance and probability.
We hope to see many families at our sex education family night on Thursday and are excited for our physics incursion next Friday! All details on Compass.

Grade 5
English- We are in the throws of writing our first 'fake' job application in preparation for the Grade 6 leadership application process. We are thinking about our personal attributes, providing authentic examples, and learning to use a formal voice in our writing.
In Spelling we are currently exploring the Greek morpheme ‘photo’.
We love this website to explore words and their etymology https://www.etymonline.com/ - check it out!
Maths- We have designed and completed a probability investigation, involving dice, spinners, coins. Get your child to share with you what they discovered around the patterns, predictability and outcomes of these experiments.
Grade 6
We have taken a deep dive into the world of parliament in preparation for camp - exploring the different levels of government and the processes that take place in each.
Students from our school will soon be undertaking an education tour of the national capital. Students will be given the opportunity to participate in a variety of educational programs with a focus on Australia’s history, culture, heritage, and democracy.
The Australian Government recognises the importance of all young Australians being able to visit the national capital as part of their Civics and Citizenship education. To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.
We have loved our slam poetry, exploring rhythm and meter at a word and sentence level.
Well done to our students for embracing the principles of BIDMAS and investigating and interpreting a range of data sets. Students have enjoyed the challenges presented in our problem-solving Mathematics units.
Billy carts are testing our STEAM design and make skills. We are currently in the marketing phase, exploring design concepts for branding. If any parents have skills in these areas and would be interested in talking to our students about this industry, please reach out, we'd love to have you.

Kitchen Garden
Phase One is almost complete - shout out to Precise Landscapes for their work.
Fencing will remain up until the end of the month to allow surfaces to settle ahead of the installation of additional garden beds.

Musica Viva Concert
What a performance! How lucky we were to be exposed to such talent. This special concert called El Camino from the group Sonido gave us a taste of Latin American music from countries like Chile and Peru, with audience interaction and lessons about traditional instruments like the zampoña and charango.
Martina (Prep C) "The concert was fun and I liked it. I liked the pan pipes. They were singing in Spanish and I understand Spanish. I loved all of it."
Zac (1M) "I got up and I got given a scarf to wear. I got shown a special dance to do and I did it with Mr Stock, Vivi and Flynn. I really liked the music and I had a lot of fun."
