Term Four

Volleyball Champs

In the first week of term both the girls and boys NSATIS volleyball teams competed in the state grand finals against Hobart's Guilford Young College here at LCS.  Both LCS teams finished the season undefeated winning the northern grand finals late last term and this week facing the winners of the southern competition.

The girls team played exceptionally well displaying a high degree of skill and fantastic teamwork. They took the first set 25-21, the second set 25-16, and the third set 25-13.  Well done to the girls, and coach Mrs Sandy Shand, on a wonderful season and exemplary result – state grand final winners!

The boys team played next and started well with a close 28/26 win in the first set.  While there were some amazing passages of play from LCS throughout the remainder of the game, the experienced Guilford Young boys held on to win the next three sets 25-22, 25-18, 25-18.  Although it was not our day, the boys should be very pleased with their efforts to be northern champions and then runner-up in the state grand final.

Volleyball has become very popular at LCS in recent times and our teams have shown that there is a real depth of talent in our school.  We look forward to next year with hopefully more new players joining in.

A big thank you to Ryan Bosker, Ben Jessup, Sandy Shand and Nathan Hill for organising and coaching this year.

The Primary Athletics Carnival was a wonderful, sunny, fun day on our own LCS oval on Friday!

What a blessing it was to be out in the fresh air, using our bodies, energy and best cheering voices together as vibrant teams.

And the winner was… 🥁🥁🥁 Melaleuca! Followed by Barrow and then Tamar.

Congratulations to every participant, and a massive thank you to all the parents, teachers and volunteers who diligently helped make this day a success. Special mention to Mr Sam de Ruiter who organised his first LCS carnival.

Science Challenge

A massive congratulations to our Year 9 and 10 students who competed in the national Science and Engineering Challenge in Newcastle on Friday October 31 and secured a solid third place. Science and Technology teacher Mr Brent Jose said he was impressed by the fabulous attitude of the 32 LCS students who travelled for the event.

"They worked well as a team, were respectful, had great attitudes, followed instructions–it was just so easy to navigate from one task to another," he said.

"There were a lot of nerves to begin with but after lunch, as points started coming in, there were more smiles on students' faces, more confidence, and that's when I thought we had a chance."

LCS came second in the Bridge Challenge, missing out on first place by a whisker due to a 1g difference in the bridge's weight!

The trip wasn't all work. Thursday was a jam-packed day of sight-seeing, including a swim in the surf, dolphin-spotting, dinner out and lots of walking.

Thank you to our major financial sponsors who made it possible for our students to attend: Tones Solar and Electrical, Hotondo Homes Launceston and Tas City Building.

And a big thank you also to parents, to Mr Jose, Mr Andrew Swift, Mrs Sandy Shand and Mrs Liz Winter who attended with the students, and for those who did a lot of important work behind the scenes, including Mrs Maree Lawes, Mr Graeme Smith and Mrs Lisa Hill.

Here, Fishy Fishy!

This term, Head of Primary Mr Phill van Ryn and Mr John van Donselaar took the Year 6 SLC and House Captains on a fishing trip to Beauty Point. The outing was a thank-you for great leadership in their final year of Primary School.

It was a stunning day and the fish were biting! Students managed to land a bunch of fish but, unfortunately, they were all undersized and went back into the river. It provided a wonderful opportunity to learn about fishing for the future, however!

Thank you to our Year 6 leaders for your service throughout 2025.

Malaysian Cooking Class

After the success of the cooking class earlier in the year coinciding with My Cultural Heritage Day, we hosted another, this time with a Malaysian flavour.

Mrs Fancy Reyes-Ibarra invited LCS parent Mrs Patricia Crampsie to teach 10 parent-student pairs to cook Chicken Rendang and Nasi Lemak. She began the class explaining the significance of the dishes to her family and some of the more unusual ingredients used, including galangal and pandan leaves.

The fragrance wafting from the HEC room was irresistible! Lemongrass, coconut, kaffir lime, shallots, tender chicken... you get the idea. And we're told the meal was just as delicious as the aroma (participants took the meal home to share with their families after).

We love the way these classes not only give the opportunity for parents to connect with their children, but also provide insight into one of the many cultures that are an important part of our school community.

Thank you to Ms Eliza Lovelock and Mrs Caroline Bain for their help in ensuring this cooking class was just as successful as the last. And if you missed out, don't worry! Planning for the next in 2026 is already underway.

Congratulations!

We are always so proud of the achievements of our students, and the dedication, passion and interest it demonstrates. Here are just a few from this term:

  • Year 8 student Henry Midson was selected for the Tasmanian athletics team, competing at the 2025 Australian All Schools National in Melbourne last week. Bravo Henry!
  • Year 8 student Miles Chandler will be representing Tasmania in January at the U14 National Indoor Hockey Championships in Goulburn, NSW.  Cheering you on Miles!

  • Congratulations to the LCS senior boys division 1 basketball team for its win against St Patrick's College in the recent grand final, 62-46. This is the first time LCS has won this division in 13 years, and it was an amazing win – especially as all but one player is from Year 9, and the team had no subs, making a solid comeback from half-time when they were down by one point. Congratulations to Charlie Baker (MVP), Charlie Peters, Riley Powell, Sam Strating, Josiah Poole and Noah Foley.
  • The junior girls division 3 basketball team also won in their grand final against Kings Meadows, 28-21. Congratulations to Vienna Dingemanse (MVP), Isla Myers, Ephrath Mebrahtu, Audrey Murphy, Annali Badcock, Holly Edmunds, Eleanor Morgan and Emma Hesketh. And a big thank you to the team coaches, Mr Brentley Woods and Mrs Madeline Dingemanse.
