YEAR 5

FROM THE CLASSROOM
Year 5 students have settled into Term 2 exceptionally well and have been working diligently across all learning areas. They have been focusing on our school's value of respect and how they can display this in and outside of the classroom.
Year 5 has been thoroughly enjoying our novel study of 'Once' by Morris Gleitzman, which has provided a meaningful opportunity to explore real historical events through the lens of an engaging fictional story.
In Writing, students created impressive action narratives and applied three key Talk 4 Writing tools to strengthen their work:
- Push for vocabulary that powerfully intensifies the desired mood and feeling.
- Use a character’s reaction or the author’s comments to show the effect of a description.
- Advance the action through speech that shows emotion.
In Mathematics, students have been working hard to deepen their understanding of decimals. They have been learning to order numbers with more than two decimal places on a place value chart and number lines, helping them build confidence with increasingly complex decimal concepts.
In Inquiry, students have been exploring a range of notable Australians and are beginning to think critically about the difference between being famous, notable or both. Next week, they are looking forward to taking their learning further by researching the strengths, values and achievements of these influential Australians.
STUDENT QUOTES
“I have liked writing this week because we have got to write our own unique stories and use the tools we learnt” - Ishaani 5E
“We got to do lots of fun stuff in STEM. We got to experiment with liquids and mixtures. One by one we smelled each object and tried to find which was which. Some scents smelled the same, so it was hard to figure out” - Vaishvi 5D
“In Visual Art we have been doing finger knitting. People that are experts at finger knitting have been weaving circles and squares. It has been fun and we have got to experience covering the fence with yarn. It is a project that we are working on to make it look nice in our school.” - Rianshi 5F
