YEAR 1

FROM THE CLASSROOM

In Wellbeing we are learning about the possible actions we could implement to face or solve problems, such as racism in the yard. We also discussed the different outcomes of the choices we make.

In Reading, we are continuing with building and developing our tools for reading; these include learning about the interesting words in our texts and finding the clues which tell us the text’s main idea. These tools help us understand our texts in a deeper way and guide us when we are retelling a story.

In Writing, we have begun innovating our narratives using the Talk 4 Writing model text, ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We have been exploring how to paint a picture of our characters in our readers’ minds using a range of adjectives describing their external and internal being such as:

‘...buttercup puppy...’ - Alizah, 1G

‘Big Green Riding Hood...’ - Konrad, 1G

‘An evil witch...’ - Aleena, 1H

‘A beautiful princess...’ - Amelia W, 1H

During Phonics, we continued to learn 7.2 sounds with: /er/ (river monster cake) and -er suffix. We have been looking at these sounds through a variety of reading and writing tasks.

In Mathematics, we have been exploring and investigating the topic of ‘capacity’ by using a variety of containers to discover which hold more and which hold less. We have been using water, sand, and other materials to fill, compare and measure different containers while developing our understanding of capacity through hands-on learning and discussion.

In Inquiry we have continued learning about ‘The Secret Life of Plants’. We are discovering how plants change across the seasons and that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples have more than 4 seasons! Our Inquiry topic also linked to our STEM lessons as we learnt about the life cycles of plants and observed how our plants grow.

‘We learnt about how plants grow... that they can start as a little grass then grows into a big flower...’ - Greyson, 1H

‘...that there are 5 stages of the life cycle for plants.’ - Levi, 1H
