Library News

Donations
Libraries across the world run on the generosity and kindness of the people within their communities. This week, we would like to put the spotlight on one such student, young Caitlyn L from Platypus 2, and her mother, Lucy. This week, Caitlyn donated a large selection of texts written in Chinese, which will be a significant benefit to our "Other Languages" section.
As many of you know, our school welcomes many students who come to us from China. These students often have little or no English, and the experience can be very overwhelming for them. Mr. Matthews has seen the happiness in these students' eyes when they discover our Other Languages section; it helps create a bond and a level of comfort for them. Thanks to Caitlyn and her family, students arriving from overseas will now have access to a much wider range of Chinese-language texts.
If you have books in good condition that you are looking to rehome, please consider donating them to the library. We ask that the covers and pages be intact and that there is no significant discolouration. Please also consider the content of the books; if you have material that is on the more mature side, those may be better suited for your local public or community library.
Thank you again to Caitlyn and her family for their wonderful contribution.
International Books
Mr. Matthews recently signed up with the bookstore Kinokuniya. Kinokuniya is one of Sydney's largest bookshops and a major stockist of international books and memorabilia. Located in the Galleries Victoria, it is an amazing place for anyone who loves to read. Recently, Kinokuniya opened a second store in Chatswood Westfield; it is a great privilege that they chose to open in our local area.
Why is this important? As a specialist in international texts and books in other languages, it means our school now has access to a wide range of titles published in languages including Japanese, Korean, and Chinese. The school may also be able to source books from various other language backgrounds.
So, how do we order books from this store? If there is a text you would like to see in the library, please have your child come to the library, write the name of the book and the author on a Post-it note, and place it in the suggestion box. Mr. Matthews will do his best to see if it is available for purchase from Kinokuniya. Please consider whether the book is suitable for a school library and check to see if it is still in publication.
Mr Matthews is excited to see what you might request!
Overdue Notices
Each term we send out overdue notifications. Our main objective is to have books returned to the collection, as many of our titles are no longer in print and cannot be replaced if lost.
We kindly ask that you check your child’s bag for an overdue notice and look around the house for any library books. As Mr. Matthews reminds students every term: remember to check the "odd" places! Last term, a student even discovered overdue books at the bottom of the laundry hamper.
Some students may receive a notice highlighted in green. The library team is particularly interested in locating these items as they have been out since last year. We ask families to double-check at home, and refer to the article below for guidance on paying for a replacement if the book cannot be found.
We understand that books can go missing, sometimes even within a student’s own classroom. If you believe a book has already been returned, please write a note on the overdue slip, sign it, and return it to the library staff. For highlighted slips, include which class your child was in last year so we can check those classroom areas.
If you need support regarding this, please contact the school. We are always happy to help.
Paying for Misplaced Books
