Mini School Updates

Junior School

Since the beginning of Term 2, the Junior School has been buzzing with energy, learning and community spirit. A particular highlight was our recent Open Day, where Grade 5 and 6 students visited to experience a day in the life of our school community. Students enjoyed exploring the campus, participating in engaging activities and watching an exciting performance presented by our talented LIA students. It was wonderful to see our visitors so enthusiastic and involved throughout the day, while our students proudly showcased the vibrant learning environment and opportunities that make our Junior School such a special place.

We have also had some changes to our team in the Junior School, with Mr. Glover stepping down as Year 8 Coordinator and Miss Foulds stepping in. We thank Mr. Glover for all his work during Term 1 and we welcome Miss Foulds to the team.

We look forward to an exciting remainder of the term as students continue to grow, learn and celebrate their achievements together.

Middle School

It has been a busy but rewarding start to Term 2 in the Middle School. We have had assemblies about work experience, meetings about the upcoming Debutante Ball and we have had a focus on building relationships.

We warmly welcome Mr. Kieran O’Dwyer as our Assistant Principal to Lowanna College and more specifically our Middle School. Many students are now familiar with his face being seen around the yard or in classes. His expertise and warmth are already appreciated.

Last week, we sent out an email to all students and parents/guardians, here is a snapshot of the messaging:

WHERE ARE YOU...I would like to re-iterate the message that students have consistently heard, that leaving the school grounds during the school day is not allowed. Our duty of care as staff includes breaks and we need to know where students are from 8:45am until 3pm. This becomes an issue when students are making choices to leave the school grounds or 'be truant' from class. It is important that students are where they are supposed to be.

Furthermore, ALL phones need to be in a locker during the school day. Should you need to contact someone, please go to the Middle School Office.

WHO ARE YOU...Lowanna offers many supports to students - and we only want the best. This includes how students look and act. Recently we have had students damaging and vandalising our Middle School toilets. So, we have made some cosmetic improvements with hopefully some more to follow. Further to this, if students need support with uniform or items of stationary, we are only too happy to help and provide support. Please come and see us in the Middle School.

WHY ARE YOU...I am putting a 'ban' on the squishes and the 'Needoh' toys that are a recent craze. Whilst we appreciate the need for sensory and regulating items, there have been too many of these toys popping and creating havoc (and slime) in our classrooms, locker bays and toilets.

I am excited to report that any offers of attendance for the Middle School Camp should now have been received in the post.

The confirmation of Deb Ball partners and the Deb Ball contract has also been shared with students – any issues, please see the Deb Ball Coordinators.

Senior School

The Senior School has seen a positive start to Term 2 with many of our Year 11 students attending the VCE camp to learn about their options once they finish their secondary schooling. Thanks to Kirsty Mitchell and Alisha Disisto for organising this event and ensuring students got the most out of their time.

All students completing a Year 12 VCE subject attended a study skills session run by Elevate Education recently. Students were shown various ways to learn and remember information as well as being provided with some ideas on how to best organise their notes and their time. Parents and guardians can join in on the webinars offered throughout the year by Elevate Education to assist their students to succeed in VCE. The next one will be held on Wednesday the 20th of May and focus on 'How you can support your child during exams'. Register at:  https://go.elevateeducation.com/auschoolwebinars

As we approach the examination period for VCE students and the end of Units 1 & 3, it is crucial that students continue to use their time effectively and seek support when needed. Students enrolled in VET subjects should ensure that they have finalised the submission of any work to TAFE so that this can be assessed.

Exams will begin on Friday the 5th of June and run through to Friday the 12th of June. It is important for students to complete these to the best of their ability to ensure they can continue to develop their skills and identify areas for improvement.

The General Achievement Test (GAT) will take place on Tuesday the 16th of June. Attendance is compulsory for all students completing a Unit 3 and 4 subject. Information about the GAT can be found in the brochure below.

We are looking forward to celebrating the end of Semester 1 with our students at the Senior School Formal on Friday the 19th of June. Further information regarding ticket sales will be shared once the venue has confirmed final arrangements.

Finally, a reminder about the importance of regular attendance. Wherever possible, we ask that appointments be scheduled outside of school hours. The best way we can support students in their learning is by having them in the classroom. If a student does need to leave early, they should bring a signed note from a parent/guardian, or the parent can contact Julie in the Senior School on 03 5129 9243 to advise of the absence.
