April is Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism awareness month! So we have been learning about autism. It was interesting to hear from the students in our year level.
We learnt that autism is a form of neurodiversity. Having autism can make learning in a classroom hard. It can be hard because of the way brains work so surrounding noises might be louder.
The point of the month is to raise awareness.

Has anyone heard of the word autism? I bet 80% of the people reading this has. Autism means that your brain paths go different ways than a person without autism. There are two words that you are probably going to learn today. The first one is neurodivergent which is a big umbrella term which includes hidden disabilities like autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia and others. The second one is neurotypical which is when someone has a typical brain. Neurodivergent brains work differently to neurotypical brains and may have different strengths as well as challenges. In Australia the population is 27.2 million and out of the entire population there are about 290,900 people who are autistic (diagnosed people). In our school, each class has at least one autistic person. April is also Autism awareness month. Year 6 is learning about it and having lessons. So far, we have watched some videos and one person in our grade shared a presentation about autism and their experience of being autistic.
