PENTECOST

On Sunday we celebrated Pentecost.

Pentecost is a very important feast in the Catholic Church that takes place 50 days after Easter. It celebrates the moment when the Holy Spirit came to the disciples of Jesus.

After Jesus rose from the dead and then returned to heaven, His followers were unsure about what to do next. They gathered together and prayed. Then something extraordinary happened. A sound like a powerful wind filled the room, flames of fire appeared above their heads and they were filled with the Holy Spirit (God’s presence living within them).

After this, the disciples began speaking in different languages and went out to share the message of Jesus with people from many nations.

Pentecost is often called the “birthday of the Church” because this is when the disciples began their mission to spread Jesus’ message to the world. It also reveals the role of the Holy Spirit.  The Holy Spirit is the third Person of the Trinity (Father, Son, and Holy Spirit).

At Pentecost, the Spirit guided the disciples, gave them understanding and helped them speak and act with confidence. It transformed the disciples. Before Pentecost, the disciples were uncertain and afraid. After receiving the Holy Spirit, they became courageous leaders, willing to teach, serve, and even risk their lives for their faith. Pentecost is important because it marks the beginning of the Church.
