The month of May holds a special place in the Catholic tradition as the Month of Mary, Mother of Jesus. Throughout this month, we are invited to reflect on Mary’s example of faith, courage, compassion and trust in God. Mary reminds us of the importance of caring for others, listening deeply, and responding with love and kindness — values that connect strongly with our 2026 school theme of Conscious Compassion. During May, many Catholic communities spend time honouring Mary through prayer, reflection and acts of service, inspired by her gentle strength and unwavering faith.

Over the past few weeks, many of our students have also had the opportunity to participate in Reflection Days. These experiences provide an important chance for students to step away from the normal routines of school life, spend time with one another, reflect on themselves and their relationships, and grow in understanding and connection.

Our Year 7 Reflection Day was facilitated by staff and focused on themes of identity, friendships and communication. Students explored the importance of knowing themselves, building positive relationships and recognising the impact that words and actions can have on others.

Our Year 8 and Year 9 students participated in Reflection Days facilitated by the Passionist Youth Retreat Team from Melbourne. These days were filled with energy, laughter, honesty and meaningful conversations, providing students with opportunities to reflect on their lives, relationships, values and personal growth. We thank the Passionist team for the wonderful way they engaged with and inspired our students.

We also look forward to celebrating Catholic Education Week in a couple of weeks’ time, from 25–29 May. Catholic Education Week is always a special opportunity to celebrate what makes our Catholic schools unique — our strong sense of community, faith, learning and service.

This year’s theme, “Peace be with you all” (Romans 15:33), reminds us of the important role we each play in bringing peace, hope and compassion into our homes, classrooms and wider community.

As part of Catholic Education Week celebrations, we will gather together for the CESH Mass at St Mary’s Church beginning at 11:30 am. This will be a wonderful opportunity to come together in prayer and celebration with members of our wider Catholic education community.

May this season continue to be one of reflection, gratitude and peace for all members of our school community.

A Prayer for Mother’s Day:

Loving God,

Today we pause.

We slow down from the busyness of life to give thanks for the gift of mothers and all those who nurture, guide and care for others with love.

We thank You for mothers, grandmothers, stepmothers, foster mothers and all women who have shared a mother’s heart. We remember too the fathers who carry both the role of mother and father, and all caregivers who quietly give of themselves each day with patience, strength and compassion.

Help us to be grateful for the sacrifices often unseen,

for the comforting words,

 the gentle encouragement,

the unwavering support,

and the love that reflects Your own care for us.

On this Mother’s Day, may all who nurture others know they are valued, appreciated and deeply loved.

Bless those who find this day difficult — those who grieve, long, remember or carry pain — and surround them with Your peace and tenderness.

May we continue to live with conscious compassion,

showing gratitude not only today, but every day.

We ask this in Your name.

Amen.

Jesus light of the world, guide us

St Joseph, journey with us

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop, pray for us
