ART/CRAFT

A warm welcome to all our families, especially those Prep families joining our community for the first time! For those who don’t know me, my name is Antoinette Vaiano, and I am truly privileged to continue teaching art and craft at TPS. It has been a rewarding experience, and I am very excited to start the year in our new art room.
In the art room this term, we revisited our Growth Mindset, focusing on how it can support students’ learning in creative ways. We discussed a variety of positive mantras that encourage perseverance and openness to learning, even when challenges arise. These mantras help create a supportive atmosphere where every student feels empowered to experiment and grow.
One of the highlights of our first weeks was a collaborative project using straws to blow paint onto paper to create crazy monsters. In this activity, students worked in groups to create a collective artwork. The students thoroughly enjoyed the surprise element and the opportunity to collaborate on such a fun and creative project. I’ve included some images of our students in action.
In week three, we began focusing on our Fashion unit to inspire our art folios. Students were introduced to the works of fashion designer Vivienne Westwood and Rei Kawakubo of Comme de Garcons, currently exhibiting at NGV. Check out this link:
This year the whole school is focusing on fashion as a creative art form. Students will become fashion designers and they need your support!
Can you please send children to school with an old clean T-shirt or other item of clothing, depending on what their class is focusing on.
Please speak to your child and they will let you know what they need to bring in. We have discussed that fashion is one of the biggest waste industries in the world. Please do not go out and purchase clothing for this artwork. The idea is that students become sustainable designers and rework old clothes, to transform garments into modern and unique fashion pieces.
Art techniques will include sewing, painting, cutting, patching, tie dying and drawing on fabrics. Students may alter clothing such as turning jeans into shorts, dresses into tops, or reimagining clothing. This reduces waste, encourages creativity, and promotes sustainable styles.
Please be mindful to not send clothing that is precious or special to the art room.
Thank you for your ongoing support of the art program. It’s a joy to witness the students’ growth and creativity, and I look forward to sharing more updates with you throughout the year!
