UNIT FOCUS

This term in Unit Focus the 4/5/6 students are learning about Space Science. Last week students learnt new terms like tilt, axis, rotation and revolution before exploring how these concepts create day and night. Students rotated through a series of hands on stations that included;  using marbles to explore how earth makes one full revolution around the sun in a year, using dodgeballs and stress balls to investigate how the earth's tilt affects day and night across the globe and using torches and lamps to explore how the earth's rotation on its axis creates day and night.

This week, students learnt about seasonal changes. They heard a story from Mualgal artist from Mua Island in the Torres Strait, Uncle David Bosun, about how the position in which the sun sets over or between Tuin, Matu or Kubai Kubai island helps to determine seasonal changes and therefore changes in activities, food and plant life. Students then explored two different Indigenous seasonal calendars from places around Australia, created scientific drawings of what was happening during these seasons and compared the similarities and differences between these seasons.

  • Leo T says, “It was fun doing the projects and researching different seasons on the computers.”

  • Marley W says, “It was really fun using the new computers and learning all the different Woi Wurrung seasons.”

  • Margot says, “I really liked learning about all the different seasons and how the earth goes around the sun and I especially liked the drawing.”

On Fridays, grade 6 students are learning to play rounders for interschool sports while the 4/5s are practicing team building and sport skills in a series of games and sports. We are very grateful to the Aboriginal Advancement League for letting us use the beautiful Fitzroy Stars oval to train on!
