Specialist Feature News - 1/2 and 5/6 Science

你好 nǐ hǎo to our wonderful community!

What a fabulous time we are having in Science this term!

Our Year 1/2 and Year 5/6 scientists are exploring Space, and there has been plenty of curiosity and excitement in our classrooms.

Year 1/2 students have been learning about the Earth’s rotation and revolution, and how these movements cause day and night in different parts of the world. Last week, they explored the phases of the Moon and used playdough models to represent what we see in the night sky. Along the way, students discussed and addressed common misconceptions, such as whether the Moon actually changes shape and where moonlight comes from.

This week, students have begun investigating the planets in our solar system and their positions in relation to the Sun. They are developing a wonderful understanding of how our solar system is organised.

Year 5/6 students have been comparing and contrasting the effects of gravity on Earth and across the solar system. They have researched questions such as: What keeps the planets in orbit? and How do a planet’s distance from the Sun and its mass affect its gravity?

Students have learned about the difference between mass and weight, including how weight changes on different planets while mass remains constant. They have also explored the Earth’s rotation, revolution, relative size and tilt, and investigated why we have leap years. In the coming weeks, we are excited to delve deeper into space exploration, inventions and the history of space discovery.

If your family is keen to get our exploring in Melbourne, please check out this incredible Solar System Walk along the foreshore starting at Marina Reserve in St Kilda. Each millimetre you walk represents 1000 kilometres. As far as walking trails go, this 5.9km stretch from the Sun to the dwarf planet Pluto is an outstanding way to model the relative distances between the planets and to connect your child's learning to the real world.
