Year 7 and 8

The beginning of 2026 has been a fantastic start for our students, and it has been wonderful to welcome so many new families to our school. I’ve really enjoyed getting to know the Year 7s and 8s and I’m looking forward to ensuring that our students continue to have wonderful educational experiences throughout the rest of the year.

Christopher O’Brien - Assistant Principal

It has been a fantastic and energetic start to the year in the Junior School, with a real buzz of excitement across our learning community. Our Year 7 students have made a wonderful transition into high school life. They have quickly begun forming new friendships, getting to know their teachers, and building confidence as they navigate new routines, subjects, and spaces. It has been especially pleasing to see their enthusiasm and positive attitude as they embrace this important milestone.

There is also growing anticipation as our Year 7 cohort prepares for their upcoming camp at Phillip Island. This experience will provide a valuable opportunity for students to strengthen friendships, develop independence, and create lasting memories outside the classroom.

Our Year 8 students have also started the year extremely well. They have returned with maturity and focus, settling quickly into their new classes and establishing strong relationships with peers and teachers. It has been great to see them take on leadership within the Junior School and model positive learning behaviours for our newest students.

Overall, the atmosphere across the Junior School has been very positive, with students demonstrating enthusiasm, pride, and readiness for the year ahead.

A reminder to families and students about uniform expectations and mobile phone procedures. Students are required to wear the correct school uniform each day and ensure phones are stored in lockers during school hours, in line with Department of Education policy. We appreciate your support in reinforcing these expectations.

We look forward to a wonderful term ahead filled with learning, growth, and opportunity for all students.

Year 7

The Year 7s have made such a brilliant start to their high school journeys and we’ve been so impressed by their initiative, organisation, and resilience. Thank you to all parents and carers for coming along to our interviews at the start of the year, which was a fantastic opportunity to put the Year 7s at ease and set them up for success.

Throughout our action-packed start to the term, Year 7s have done an excellent job of navigating classrooms, getting to know their new teachers, and adjusting to the coursework of a high school student. Students all completed PAT testing for Reading and Maths, which has been a great way for us to pinpoint their learning progress and needs.

New friendships and connections have been formed across the cohort, which has been lovely to see. Year 7s have been involving themselves in our sport teams, swimming carnival, and lunchtime clubs, which is a great way to become part of the school community. Year 7 Camp was also a huge highlight for students and staff, and was such a fun and adventurous way to form and fortify relationships and really become a part of Sunbury College.

We’re so excited to see what the rest of the year will bring, the Year 7s have made an excellent start, which we’re sure will carry them through to a wonderful year.

Year 8

We would like to warmly welcome families and students to the new school year. As students move into their second year of secondary school, it has been great to see the increased confidence, familiarity with routines and willingness to take greater responsibility for their learning and behaviour. Many students have returned ready to reconnect with peers and teachers and have settled quickly back into school life.

Throughout the first few weeks, there has been a strong focus on re-establishing classroom expectations, being prepared for lessons, and taking ownership of behaviour and effort. Students have been encouraged to use their planners and Compass effectively, communicate respectfully and support one another to maintain a positive learning environment. Overall, the cohort has made a positive and mature start to the year, and we thank families for their continued support as students continue to grow in responsibility.

We are looking forward to Year 8 Camp coming up, which will be a fantastic opportunity for students to challenge themselves, strengthen relationships and continue building a positive cohort culture.

Warm Regards

Junior School Team
