Dear Parents and Carers,
I hope you and your children are well settled into the routines of school life this term. Our youngest students are coming along so well and have shown us how calm and predictable classroom routines help them to adjust to the rigour of school life smoothly and quickly.
This year our big focus in Mathematics is to build fluency and mastery in our students in Counting. By doing this, our students will be accurate and speedy in counting and able to navigate the load of challenge within the mathematics classroom because they are already fluent with their counting. Becoming fluent requires practice at a single skill each day until the skill is mastered. Once students have achieved mastery in a skill they can move on to the next one. These skills are meant to be practised orally but if your child would benefit from doing some writing of numbers, please do so. There is much benefit in positively encouraging your child to practice these skills each day and to foster a love for Mathematics and numbers. There is no time limit on how long it takes to master a skill, so students’ confidence will grow with each skill as long as they are given the time to practice, make mistakes and learn from them. Find the skill that your child is at and start from there.
Please find below the counting skills that can be practiced by all students from Foundation to Year 6.

Skills 5 to 8
