Our Term 1 Respectful Relationships topic is Personal & Cultural Strengths. This will involve students learning about:
- Identifying and describing the personal and cultural strengths of both themselves and others.
- Understanding how personal and cultural strengths can be used at school and home.
- Why it is important to value personal and cultural strengths that are different from our own.
Teaching students about Personal & Cultural Strengths is backed by extensive empirical research. Studies have shown that students with a greater awareness of their own personal and cultural strengths experience stronger feelings of self-worth and an increased sense of belonging within their own communities.
In Grade 2, children are explicitly taught classroom routines and behaviour expectations that align with our School Wide Expectations. These routines are practised, revisited and reinforced so students clearly understand what is expected of them across different settings. Research shows that when children have a clear understanding of routines and expectations, they feel safe, secure and confident, which supports positive relationships, self-regulation and engagement in learning. By creating predictable and supportive learning environments, we help every child feel ready to learn and thrive at school.
If you have any questions about how you can support your child’s learning of these topics at home, please get in contact with your child’s classroom teacher.
