PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE

Mrs Jillian Rainger

jrainger@arm.catholic.edu.au

As we settle into the rhythm of Term 1, we find ourselves at a significant point in the Church’s calendar. This week marks the beginning of Lent, a forty-day journey of reflection, renewal, and preparation.

In our rural context, we understand the seasons' cycles better than most. Just as the land requires fallow time to regenerate, our spirits require Lent to recalibrate. This year, I am particularly moved by Pope Leo's invitation to us that Lent is not merely about personal deprivation, but about profound attentiveness.

The Pope’s message challenges us to look beyond traditional fasting. He asks us for a "grace of greater attentiveness," specifically calling for a fast that extends to our use of language.

"Let us ask for the strength that comes from the type of fasting that also extends to our use of language, so that hurtful words may diminish and give way to a greater space for the voice of others."

In a world—and a digital landscape—that often feels loud and abrasive, these words are a vital reminder for our school community. Whether in the playground, the classroom, or our local township, our words have the power to either build up or tear down. This Lent, I invite our students and families to practice "quieting"  in order to make room for the voices of those who are often unheard.

Our mission as a Catholic school is to ensure that the "cry of those who suffer finds welcome." This isn't just a lofty theological concept; it is lived out in how we treat the "least among us"—the student feeling isolated, the family doing it tough, or those in our global community supported through our Project Compassion initiatives.

By listening deeply, we open paths toward  hope. Together, let us strive to make our K-11 community a true "civilization of love."

Lenten Commitments in our School:

  • Ash Wednesday Services: Students across all year levels will participate in liturgies to mark the start of our journey.
  • A "Walk for Water" event in the last week of term
  • Project Compassion: Boxes will be in every classroom. We encourage students to see their small sacrifices as a means of global solidarity.

I hope this Lent can be a time of working towards making sure every student in our school feels they belong, that they feel safe, that they feel valued, respected and cared for and that they have the opportunity to learn. In doing so, we can help develop young people who will continue this caring attitude into their lives post school and make our community a positive place.  Our world needs these future leaders.
