Simple Home Routines That Support Learning
At St Joseph’s Mernda, we know that strong learning is supported by clear, consistent routines. When children know what to expect, they are more likely to feel settled, organised and ready to engage in their learning.
Simple routines such as a consistent bedtime, calm mornings and regular expectations at home can make a big difference to how students begin their school day. A good night’s sleep helps children manage their emotions, focus during lessons and have the energy they need to keep trying when learning becomes challenging.
At school, we also use consistent routines to help students feel safe and ready to learn. Teachers support students through visual schedules, clear lesson routines, social stories and pre-corrections. These strategies help students understand what is happening, what is expected, and how they can be successful.
Pre-corrections are reminders given before a transition or activity begins. For example, before moving to assembly or starting group work, teachers may remind students what respectful listening, safe movement or active participation looks like. This helps students feel prepared and gives them the best chance to make positive choices.
We also recognise and reward positive behaviour when students meet expectations. This helps students understand what they are doing well and encourages them to continue making choices that support their learning and the learning of others.
Families can support this work by keeping routines consistent at home. This might include regular bedtimes, having bags packed the night before, preparing uniforms and lunches early, or using a simple morning checklist. These small habits can reduce stress and help children arrive at school feeling calm and ready.
By working together, home and school routines help students feel secure, confident and ready to learn each day.
