Year 6 Highlight

Year Six students have enjoyed a busy and engaging semester in Maths, exploring a range of important concepts through both explicit learning and hands-on activities. They have developed their understanding of decimals by practising addition and subtraction using partitioning and vertical algorithm methods, while also applying these skills in real-world contexts. Students have also explored fractions by comparing and ordering fraction pairs, investigating equal parts, equivalence and related denominators. More recently, they have been learning about 3D shapes, including the properties of right prisms, congruent faces, and how cross-sections can be identified by slicing shapes in different ways.

Our Friday applied Maths tasks have been a highlight, giving students the chance to use their learning in creative and practical ways. Students took part in “The Amazing Decimal Race”, worked collaboratively during a ‘Mini Olympics’ to record distances and calculate averages, and created fraction pictures before trading slices with classmates to deepen their understanding of equivalent values. They also investigated 3D shapes by creating models with play dough, slicing them to explore cross-sections, and building right prisms using toothpicks and marshmallows. These activities have encouraged problem-solving, teamwork, mathematical discussion and plenty of creativity.
