Partnerships That Matter: School and Home

Mrs Hodgetts

At our school, we know that the most powerful learning happens when there is a strong partnership between school and home. When students see the important adults in their lives working together, it sends a clear message: learning matters.

As a Catholic community, we also recognise that education is a shared responsibility grounded in faith. In partnership with families, we are called to nurture not only the minds of our students, but their hearts and spirits. In doing so, we help our children grow into the people God is calling them to be.

While classrooms are filled with rich opportunities each day, the support students receive at home plays an equally important role in building confidence, independence, and a love of learning. The good news is that this support doesn’t need to be complicated or time-consuming—often, it’s the small, consistent actions that make the biggest difference.

Something as simple as asking your child about their day can open the door to meaningful conversations. Instead of the familiar “What did you do today?”, you might try questions like:

  • “What challenged you today?”
  • “What made you feel proud?”
  • “Did you help someone or did someone help you?”

These questions encourage reflection and help children to see learning as more than just tasks—it becomes about growth, effort, and connection.

Establishing simple routines at home also supports success at school. Having a regular time and space for reading or completing tasks, encouraging your child to organise their belongings, and promoting good sleep habits all contribute to a positive learning mindset.

Equally important is allowing children to develop independence. It can be tempting to step in quickly when things feel tricky, but giving children the space to problem-solve, make mistakes, and try again helps build resilience and confidence—skills that are essential for lifelong learning.

In our Catholic tradition, we are reminded of the importance of walking alongside one another. Through patience, encouragement, and kindness, we model the values of compassion, respect, and perseverance—values that sit at the heart of both our faith and our learning.

At school, we are committed to creating a supportive and engaging environment for every student. When this is complemented by encouragement and consistency at home, the impact is significant.

Thank you for the role you play each day. Together, in partnership and in faith, we are not only supporting learning—we are helping to grow capable, confident, and compassionate young people.
