Senior Campus Class Spotlight D1

D1 Classroom: Learning Through Respect, Connection and Culture

In the D1 classroom, our students continue to highlight our school values of being safe, being respectful, and being learners. We are always learning and growing about kindness, positive communication, and safe choices.

This week, our learning focus centred around National Sorry Day and developing a deeper understanding of respect, connection, and acknowledgement of First Nations peoples and culture.

As a class, we created “Hands of Care” artworks to express sorrow, care, and respect for First Nations peoples who were affected. We also reflected on the importance of continuing to acknowledge and respect Elders past, present, and emerging.

Throughout the week, we explored how First Nations peoples use storytelling through art to share culture, identity, history, and connection. The D1 class created a collaborative “Map of Connections” artwork that represented unity, inclusion, respect, and the diverse connections within our classroom and wider school community.

In Maths, we used symbols and language to identify where classmates sit and where they are positioned within our classroom. This supported our understanding of direction, location, and connection.

In Geography, we learnt about the meaning of Sorry Day within Australia’s history and community. During Literacy sessions, we focused on letter formation and word creation before exploring the meaning behind some of the First Nations symbols. Our D1 learners particularly enjoyed learning about symbols representing boys, girls, connection lines and meeting places.

We are very proud of the thoughtful discussions, creativity, and respectful learning shown by all students in the D1 classroom this week.
