Sporting News

It's been an incredibly exciting term of sport here at PHS! Keep on reading to learn what all our coaches have to say about their sports, including highlights for each event day, and the students selected students as the MVK (that's The Most Valuable Kingfisher on the day). These are students demonstrating extraordinary performance, both on and off the pitch, fully showing the Preston values.
Cohort 2026-2027:
Badminton
Students engaged in a round-robin tournament with five other schools from Melbourne's northern suburbs. Competing in single and doubles matches; students had the opportunity to show off their drop and drive shots against competitive opponents.
Highlights: Lewin Blanch competing in a highly competitive and prolonged singles match against a former state champion.
MVK: Danny Macintosh for having a positive, good sports attitude the whole day and encouraging others to put in their best efforts.
Basketball
A-Grade won their pool and the final! B-Grade only dropped one game, and that was by one measly point.
Highlights: A-Grade did lose a game to Northcote 2 in their pool games but defeated the Northcote 1 team in the final. Really inspiring effort.
MVK: A-Grade: Dimi Anagnostopoulos, Matthew Morris, Martin Eslava Hughes. B-Grade: Jack Heffernan, Cooper Goodwin, Angelo Lekkas
AFL
The 2026/27 cohort competed in three demanding matches during the AFL Division Sport Day. With only 17 players available, the team played the entire day without a break. This meant most of the team were out on their feet and regularly cramping by the final game.
Despite these challenges, the group showed outstanding resilience and determination. They secured a hard-fought win against Northcote to progress to the grand final, before following up with an impressive come-from-behind victory against Thornbury to claim the division title.
Highlights: Determination in the final game, to overcome fatigue and cramping to steal the victory late in the last quarter.
MVKs: Harper Eley - two long goals from outside the arc in the finals. Ravi Singh - was pretty much cramping the entirety of the grand final. Ned Reid - Captain for the day, lead from the front the entire day.
Cohort 2028-2029
AFL
The Boys team won three out of four games on the day, with every player giving their absolute best. Despite a strong effort, we fell just short against Northcote.
Highlights: Ben Parente had highlight of the day with a spin move to avoid a defender before snapping through a classy goal.
MVKs: Ben Parente, Sam Heffernan, Jett Mitskinis
Despite being low on numbers, our girls gave it their all, powering through the cold and muddy field and kicking goals. Although we lost, our team spirit never wavered - trying their best until the final whistle blew.
MVKs: Molly Matucci - Despite being injured she rallied the team and kicked goals. Ria - for showing leadership and trying her best.
Cohort 2030:
NMR Tennis
Made it to the finals, but just missed out in a tight game. Despite losing our team were gracious and fair.
MVKs: James Bodi and Lwazi for always having a positive attitude
Athletics Carnival
We also had our whole school athletics carnival in Week 5! After a chilly start, the sun came out in the afternoon, and we had a wonderful event with incredible participation across all year levels. A highlight was the Y11/12 High jump, with so many students participating and supporting, truly demonstrating the beautiful culture at our school.
We have our highest number ever qualify for Division athletics with 108 students! Talk about participation!
Cross Country
We had our highest number of students ever attend division cross country with 70 students. Even more impressively, 40 students qualified for NMR!
A highlight came in the Under 17 boys. Ten of the top 13 competitors were PHS students! Another highlight is that 4 Preston students won their age group. A big shout out to Leaon, Ilaria, Luca and Tilly!
