What's Happening in Year 6?
Our Year 6 students have been deeply exploring the connections between literature, history and the world around them through their study of the text Us Mob Walawurru, a novel written by Indigenous authors that shares important perspectives and experiences connected to First Nations Australian history and culture. As part of this learning, students worked collaboratively in groups across the Year 6 cohort to complete a detailed novel analysis task that linked themes and ideas from the text with their Inquiry learning about First Nations Australian History.
Throughout the task, students engaged in thoughtful discussion, shared their perspectives and used evidence from both the novel and their prior learning to strengthen their understanding. It was wonderful to see students demonstrating collaboration, critical thinking and respect as they explored important historical and cultural perspectives together.
This rich learning experience provided students with an opportunity to make meaningful connections across learning areas while further developing their ability to analyse texts, communicate ideas and learn from one another.

Semester 1 Reports
As we approach the end of Term 2, we would like to remind families that Semester 1 reports will be available via the Compass app from 4:00pm on Friday 19 June. A Compass notification will be sent to families when reports become available.
This marks the first year that reports will be distributed digitally through Compass, meaning paper copies will no longer be sent home. Families will need to have the Compass app installed and connected to their account to access their child’s report. If you experience any difficulties accessing Compass, please contact our school office, where staff will be happy to assist.
While the reports will look familiar in many ways, there will naturally be some differences as we transition to a new platform. One notable change is that previous achievement scores for students in Years 1–6 will not be displayed, as Compass is a new reporting system for our school. However, the Semester 2 reports in December will show progress across the subjects that have been assessed in Semester 1 this year. If you require clarification regarding any aspect of your child’s report, please contact your child’s classroom teacher.
The report will provide more detailed information than ever before at SMCM. Alongside the progression point indicator ("the dot"), which shows where your child is currently achieving against the expected standards, families will also see two detailed learning progressions in the form of a table: one for English and one for Mathematics. These include a range of skills and understandings, with ticked indicators showing where your child is currently demonstrating success.
While our recent Learning Conversations provided valuable opportunities for in-person discussion, we believe the new semester reports offer a similarly clear and detailed picture of your child's learning and progress.
