Refugee Week 2026 - A Million Stories
Sunday 14th June - Saturday 20th June
Next week we celebrate Refugee Week. This is a time to reflect on the challenges faced by refugees, acknowledge their strength and resilience, and celebrate the positive contributions refugees make to Australian society. The theme for Refugee Week 2026 is “A Million Stories.”
As Europe recovered from the devastation of World War II, Australia responded to an international call to offer a future to people with nowhere to call home. Since that initial agreement in 1947 to receive 4000 refugees from Central Europe, Australia has issued one million permanent humanitarian visas – welcoming people from all parts of the globe, people who have helped to build modern Australia.
Refugee Week 2026 is a moment to reflect on that milestone and to celebrate the million stories behind it. Each story is unique. Each one is powerful. And together, they shape the Australia we all call home today. This is about more than a number. One person’s journey influences the lives of many others: children, grandchildren, and future generations who leave their unique mark on our shared story. A thread in something greater; a million colourful strands woven into a rich and beautiful tapestry, shaping communities and stories we continue to tell.
As we celebrate this milestone, we also look to the future:
- How can we continue to welcome people in need of safety?
- What more can we do, as individuals and communities, to offer support and understanding?
- And how can each of us show kindness and help people feel they belong?
As part of celebrating the 40th Refugee Week, a celebration born in Australia and now observed around the world, let’s keep sharing stories, challenging stereotypes, and building a more inclusive society.
At SMCM, our vibrant and diverse community is enriched by many refugee families. Their stories of courage, hope, and determination are an important part of our community. Refugee Week offers us the opportunity to listen, to learn and to strengthen our culture of welcome, respect and inclusion.
Together, this Refugee Week, let us stand in solidarity with refugees and commit to building a more welcoming, safe and sustainable home where all can find freedom.
Jesus, you and your family knew what it was like to live in a country where it was not safe.
May those who flee their own country find a new home that is safe.
Jesus, you and your family knew the terror and sorrow of leaving your home and country.
May the refugees today find safety and ways to heal in a new place.
Jesus, you and your family returned home when it was safe.
May countries become safer so refugees can go home if they wish.
Jesus, you stood up for those who were being badly treated.
Help us to find ways to speak up for the sake of those seeking asylum in our country.
Jesus, you welcomed the stranger.
Help us to welcome all those refugees who seek a safe home in Australia.
Amen
