HSIE

Year 7
Year 7 is currently completing the second core Geography unit for the semester and students are focusing on all aspects of “Place and Liveability”. Students consider population density, why people live where they do and gain an understanding of the many factors that influence the liveability of particular places. The unit will prepare students to consider our local context, with their formal assessment task focusing on the liveability factors of Wagga Wagga.
Year 8
Year 8 is continuing through their Geography semester with their second unit, “Water in the World”. Students gain an understanding of the water life cycle, the bodies of water around the world and take a deep dive into understanding one of the world's most precious resources.
As part of their exploration of Interconnections in Geography, Year 8 will set off on an excursion to Altina Wildlife Park in Darlington Point in Week 10. This immersive experience will allow them to witness firsthand the complex web of relationships between animals, their habitats, and human involvement in conservation efforts.
Year 9
Year 9 students are looking back at the profound impact of WWI and WWII on our nation through the “Australians at War” unit. This term, they've been examining key battles, the experiences of soldiers and civilians, and the lasting legacies of war on Australian identity and society. Through a combination of research, analysis of primary and secondary sources, and engaging discussions, students are developing an insight into the pivotal period in Australian history. The formal assessment for this unit will require students to examine sources related to ANZAC experiences of WWI and analyse these to answer a series of questions.
Year 10
In Term 1, Year 10 students have undertaken an in-depth study of the Holocaust, one of the darkest periods in human history. The curriculum aimed to foster not only an understanding of the historical events, but also a deeper engagement with the Holocaust's lasting impact.
In Term 2, students progress to the “Rights and Freedoms” unit that provides students with an understanding of the struggles for equality in Australia from 1945 to the present day. The unit explores the evolving rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, major civil rights movements, and considers the broader impact of global events on Australian society. The formal assessment for this task is to use primary and secondary sources to explain the impact of government policies before 1965 on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. This will be held in classes during Week 7.
Year 11 Legal Studies
Year 11 Legal Studies students recently stepped into the courtroom to role play the criminal trial of Jack from Jack and the Beanstalk! Charged with murder and break, enter and steal, Jack faced a full courtroom experience as students took on the roles of lawyers, witnesses, jurors and court officials. The activity supported students’ learning about the differences between criminal and civil law procedures while bringing the legal system to life in a creative and engaging way.
Stage 6
With the Trial HSC Examinations approaching in Weeks 3 and 4 of Term 3 and Year 11 Exams in Week 7 and 8 of Term 3, it is important to emphasise the need for consistent and regular revision of course content across all Stage 6 subjects. Maintaining the knowledge and skills that are developed in classes is one of the most effective preparation tools for formal Assessment Tasks. Below are some suggestions of strategies that students could be incorporating into their study habits and routines.
Key Preparation Strategies:
- Create a structured and consistent study schedule
- Review course content systematically
- Focus on practice exam questions
- Utilise past papers and sample responses
- Seek additional support and feedback from teachers
