A Tasty German Christmas Celebration

Year 4 and 5 students took part in a festive learning experience that allowed them to explore the delicious flavours of German Christmas foods. As part of their cultural studies, the students were introduced to a variety of traditional treats, each bringing a unique taste of the holiday season from Germany.

The students had the chance to try Lebkuchen (gingerbread), Gurke (pickles), Maoam Süßigkeiten (lollies), Spekulatius (biscuits), and Apfelschorle (a refreshing mix of apple juice and sparkling water). Using their language skills, they were encouraged to describe each item with the German sentence structures: “Das schmeckt” (This tastes) and “Das schmeckt nach” (This tastes like).

Lebkuchen, with its warm spice and sweetness, quickly became a favorite among the students. Many described it as “Das schmeckt süß und nach Ingwer” (It tastes sweet and like ginger), which perfectly captured its festive flavour. Similarly, Maoam Süßigkeiten delighted the class with their fruity flavours, prompting responses like “Das schmeckt nach Erdbeere” (It tastes like strawberry).

Next up was Spekulatius, the crunchy, spiced biscuits that perfectly evoke the Christmas spirit. Students were quick to point out, “Das schmeckt nach Zimt” (It tastes like cinnamon), making it another big hit.

Then came Apfelschorle, the refreshing apple soda that was a pleasant surprise. “Das schmeckt nach Apfel” (it tastes of apple) was the verdict from many, as it offered a delightful balance of sweetness and fizz.

But there was one item that didn’t quite have universal appeal: Gurke (pickles). While some bravely declared “Das schmeckt nach Gurke” (it tastes like cucumber), others weren’t quite as enthusiastic – “Das schmeckt EKELIG!” (that tastes DISGUSTING!) In fact, a few students seemed to decide that their taste buds preferred sweeter things, making it clear that pickles were not their holiday favourite. Maybe next year they'll try a little more courageously—or perhaps they'll leave the Gurke to the braver souls!

Overall, it was a wonderful experience for the students, who not only learned about German holiday traditions but also enjoyed some very tasty (and sometimes surprising) treats!
