WILLOUGHBY WILDLIFE STORYBOOK

Willoughby City Council proudly launched the 14th annual Wildlife Storybook, a captivating compilation of inspiring stories, poetry, and artwork created by talented Year 5 students. The storybook, unveiled by Willoughby Mayor Tanya Taylor at Chatswood Library this week, shines a spotlight on the essential biodiversity role played by small bush creatures in the local ecosystem. Congratulations to talented Year 5 authors and illustrators Vincenzo, Cristian, Max and Jacob who were presented with their awards by Mayor Taylor.

WHAT’S THE MATTER?

In Science, Year 5 students are learning about different states of matter. Last week, 5 Red created slime and explored what makes it a Non-Newtonian Fluid – a state that shares properties of both solid and liquid matter. Students combined different solids and liquids to produce the sticky mixture.

MAD ABOUT SCIENCE!

Year 5 students spent time at the Senior School laboratories when Mad About Science visited Year 5 for 'The Matter of Matter' incursion. Students had an exciting time participating in hands-on experiments and watching engaging demonstrations. This interactive session not only entertained the students but also deepened their understanding of the states of matter, a key component of the Year 5 Science curriculum.

6 BLUE

Students in 6 Blue were in for a treat when they arrived at school yesterday. Mr Buda showcased his drawing skills once again in preparation for a very special lesson that integrated Science (organic vs processed foods), Personal Development and Health (physical and mental wellbeing) and Religious Education (ethical questions around human impact on others). We are all looking forward to seeing how students respond to the questions being posed.

CREATIVE QUILLS

On Tuesday, the Creative Quills Writing Skills group met for the last time this year with a celebration in the college boardroom. Our extension writing group, which has met every Tuesday at lunchtime to hone our writing skills, welcomed two very special guests. Mr Ronchetti, our College Principal, and Ms Watson, our Deputy Principal, joined us to hear about the exciting writing projects we've been working on.

Students eagerly shared their progress and discussed how the strategies learned in Creative Quills have enhanced their writing in class. Mr Ronchetti and Ms Watson were impressed with the creativity and improvement shown by our young writers.

It's been a fantastic year for Creative Quills, and we look forward to continuing our writing journey next year!

SURF’S UP!

Year 6 are enjoying their third afternoon at Dee Why beach learning essential beach safety and ocean awareness skills.

CHRISTMAS IN THE JUNIOR SCHOOL

With only a few weeks before the end of the term, the Junior School has had to get our decorations up early! Thanks to Ms Boyle for setting up the Letters to Santa letterbox and for forwarding the letters we’ve received to the North Pole.

In case you’re wondering, here is a list of what’s been asked for so far in 2024:

PS5, good luck and joy, a kayak, some Tim Tams, an RC crawler, Lego, paint, the Diwa Excella Fishing reel, size 2500 from BCF, a dog, to be with my family, NBA cards, a shoe tv table, LED lights, gaming headphones, gaming PC, an eBike, drumset, my Grandma to feel better, Scarlett and Violet DLC, a boat, and fishing lures.

STAFFING NEWS

The Junior School supports and encourages our staff to explore additional opportunities within and outside the college. This provides opportunities for teachers to gain a fresh perspective and bring fresh ideas into their teaching practices. Furthermore, when teachers move to new schools or positions, they bring or take with them expertise and best practices from their previous roles. This cross-pollination of ideas can enhance the overall quality of education across all our schools.

It is therefore, with a mix of sadness and excitement that I announce Mr Morris (6 Gold) will be moving to St Patrick’s College, Strathfield in 2025. Over the past three years, Mr Morris has excelled as both a classroom teacher and as Acting Curriculum Coordinator. He will be taking on a leadership role as the Year 6 Coordinator at St Patrick’s. Although we will miss Mr Morris and all he brings to the Junior School, we are delighted that he will remain within the Edmund Rice family, and we look forward to seeing him on the rugby field and basketball court.

Also leaving us at the end of 2024 is Mrs van Jaarsveld. We thank Mrs van Jaarsveld for taking on the challenging role of joining a new classroom late in the school year and we wish her all the very best for the future.

TRANSITION TO HIGH SCHOOL

The shift from primary to high school can be a significant adjustment for both parents and students. It presents an excellent opportunity to develop or reinforce positive habits for the upcoming stage. The resource pack linked here is designed to equip parents and caregivers with tools to assist during this transitional period and into the future. Topics covered include Screen Time, Gaming & Online Safety, Healthy Eating & Physical Activity, Sleep, Mental Health & Wellbeing, Teen Disengagement & School Refusal, Maintaining Healthy Relationships and Vaping.

Term 4 Swim Program

The Term 4 swim program has been a fantastic opportunity for our swimmers to develop key water skills both in the pool and at the beach. With a strong focus on water safety, students have learned essential techniques for navigating different water environments. They’ve honed their swimming strokes, improved their confidence in open water, and gained valuable knowledge on how to stay safe in aquatic settings. These skills will serve them well both in and out of the water, ensuring they are well-prepared for any water-related situation.

Thursday Sport

Our swim/surf program continued this week for their third session during Thursday Sport. Whilst the feedback regarding appropriate behaviour has been overwhelmingly positive and what we would expect, I remind all students of the fact we are in the public domain at both venues and it is crucial we always make positive choices, following staff instructions.

A reminder of some key details:

Students are to arrive at school with their swimmers/speedos already on (underneath their PE uniform); it is preferable that time is not spent having to get changed at either venue. After their session, they can dry off as best as possible and put their PE shorts back on over their swimmers for the journey home.
Hats are compulsory and sunscreen will also be provided by the College.
In a small bag, students can also bring their towel, water and lunch, as no food will be purchased at either venue.
It is recommended that all students wear skins or speedos, as boardshorts can make it difficult to swim
Year 5 students will also need goggles and a rashie (compulsory)
Year 6 students will be provided with a rashie, but are welcome to bring their own

Saturday Sport:

This weekend is the final round of IPSHA Saturday fixtures and I thank all those involved in ensuring this term’s sporting participation has been outstanding. Since it is the final round please take note of the following in relation to the collection of Pius sport apparel that has been loaned to students.

Return of Basketball, Softball, and Touch Football Tops:

At the conclusion of your son’s game, he is to give the singlet/top he has used to his coach.
Distribution of tops/singlets will then again take place prior to Round 1 in 2025.

Code of Conduct:

Our young men continue to display positive levels of sportsmanship. However, it is important that the following message is reinforced. A message from IPSHA for all schools regarding code of conduct:

Display modesty in victory and graciousness in defeat
Treat all players as you would like to be treated. Do not interfere with, bully or take unfair advantage of another player.

In addition, coaches will, as required, implement what are known as mercy strategies. These are to alleviate the potential lopsidedness of games. I thank all those involved in junior sport for their continued support and adherence to the IPSHA code of conduct, such that our young men can continue to flourish across all sports and activities.

Junior School Sport Awards – 2024

We are excited to celebrate the achievements of our Junior School students at the 2024 Junior School Sport, Chess, and Debating Awards, held in conjunction with the Annual Academic Awards on Wednesday, 27 November.

Families of award recipients will receive invitations, so please ensure you RSVP promptly. While we celebrate individual accomplishments, this event also highlights the dedication, time, and unwavering support shown by each boy and their family throughout the year. We look forward to sharing this special occasion with you!

Results from IPSHA Round 11

Junior Basketball

Saturday’s games showcased the grit, skill, and teamwork that defines St Pius X basketball. Each team, regardless of the scoreline, gave their all on the court, demonstrating the values of perseverance and sportsmanship that we hold dear.

We would also like to take a moment to recognise and thank our parents and families. Your support, whether cheering from the sidelines or managing the logistics of early starts, long drives, and busy weekends, has been instrumental in ensuring our students can thrive. Your dedication has been especially appreciated during this term, with many families having to travel most weeks for games.

As we near the season’s conclusion, let’s channel the hard work and teamwork displayed throughout the term into a strong finish. This is a chance to celebrate how far we’ve come, strengthen connections on and off the court, and give our best effort in these final matches. Good luck to all teams!

Softball Match Report

The St Pius X scheduled softball game was forfeited due to insufficient players on Saturday, but the game proceeded as a friendly match with mixed teams from St Patrick's and St Pius X. Players from both sides combined to form evenly matched groups, fostering sportsmanship and camaraderie. The game displayed competitive spirit and teamwork. Parents enjoyed an engaging display of skill, with moments of humour and collaboration. The final score was a draw, 6-6, which added to the excitement. Both teams expressed gratitude for the opportunity to play, emphasising community over competition. The day ended with smiles, laughter, and a shared appreciation for the love of the softball.

Junior Touch Football

It was a challenging day on the field for our touch football teams, with tough losses against Waverley and Riverview. Despite the results, there were notable performances and plenty of areas for growth.

In a close match against Waverley, the A1 team showed great effort, falling 3-4. Christian F stood out with his excellent play in both attack and defence, leading by example. Moving forward, capitalising on scoring chances will be crucial for improvement. The A2 team faced a strong Riverview side, ending 1-15. Charlie H played with determination, but the team struggled to find consistency. Better defensive communication and cohesion will be important for future games.

B1 fought hard against Waverley, with Philip B delivering an energetic performance. Though the team lost 2-7, they showed promise. Focus on smoother transitions between defence and attack will help tighten up their game. Against Riverview, B2 ended with a 6-15 result. Josh O impressed with his attacking runs and quick thinking. Strengthening defensive positioning and maintaining consistency across the field will be key for improvement.

While the results didn’t go our way, the commitment and effort shown by all players was impressive. With continued practice and focus on key areas, we’re confident the teams will bounce back stronger. Best of luck to everyone in their next games!

District Cricket Reports

SPX U12 Blue

What an exciting game of cricket for SPX Blue this week! Pius bowled first but were unable to take regular wickets. This allowed Wakehurst to race away to a huge first innings score of 186 runs.

In response, the SPX batters slumped to 5/48 and it looked like the game would end early. But Daniel Tully and Dante Mirenzi had other ideas. They batted out the last 8 overs and Daniel scored an impressive 74 runs not out. But unfortunately, the season-high batting total of 163 wasn’t enough to secure the win for the ever improving U12s.

SPX U13 Black

The SPX U13 bowling attack was in fine form on a grey morning at Kierle Park. Through full, straight bowling we had the second placed Beacon Hill team in great trouble at 7/30 after 15 overs. Beacon Hill showed great resilience to rally to 90 all out. We started our chase well and were cruising home at 3/55 unfortunately suffering a collapse to finish 66 all out. Hugh Glover top scored with 24 runs.

Any of our bowlers could have taken man of the match. In the end it went to swing bowler Tom Moskvin who took 3/16 with a relentless straight line.

Swimming Squad Training – Term 4, 2024:

A big thank you to all the swimmers who have attended squad training this term – your effort and commitment has been fantastic! Squads will resume in Term 1 2025, with dates shared before the end of term. Excitingly, we’ll be expanding to three mornings per week as we prepare for the Invitational and IPSHA Carnivals. Keep up the great work!

Summer Tennis

It was a quiet start to the 8:00 am matches on Saturday. All students turned up, warmed up and got straight into their matches. Nathan Hon and Eric Park SPX24 were in fine form, winning 18 games to 6 against Redlands 24. Jeremy Gu SPX 22 had some great rallies in his singles match to win 6 games to 5. Paolo Mirenzi and Lucas Chong SPX 18 showed strength in the doubles winning 6 games to 2 against Redlands 18. Thanks once again to Jake and Lachlan Yu who gave up their Saturday morning to come and help out with umpiring and scoring.

The 10:00 am matches were exciting, as always, to watch. Tennis is one of the most interesting sports at the College to watch because the pairings are based on skill rather than age, so we always have some interesting pairings when it comes to height. This week was no exception. As always, the sportsmanship shown by Pius students was exceptional.

GREEN BALL

These students continue to improve their skills each week both in play and their scoring. Logan and Lachlan dominated their match winning all 3 sets. Tom Shoudra showed his skills in his singles winning 6-3 and Isaac Fernandes and Will Graham made a great team in the doubles winning 6-0.
