Year 6 to 7 Transition
Year 6 experienced a 6 into 7 Transition Presentation from local Senior Constable and Youth Engagement Officer, Jeff Healy last Thursday. Jeff offered insight into what to expect heading into high school and how to prepare for the changes they may experience, providing students with excellent strategies and (hopefully) minimising some levels of anxiety moving into 'big school'. Thanks to Jeff's experience as a Youth Engagement Officer, his presentation allowed our students to 'gear up' and get excited for Year 7, as well as what to look forward to in high school. Our Year 6 cohort enjoyed the presentation and were not afraid to ask poignant questions like; "How often to do you catch bad guys?" "are you a real police officer?" and "Do you HAVE to wear the uniform?"
Thank you to Jeff and PCYC for putting on a fun and engaging presentation for our students!
Junior Rangers Program
Over the past 10 weeks, several students in Year 7 and 8 have been involved in the Indigenous Junior Ranger program. This program, coordinated by Aunty Pam Widders and delivered by Newarra Aboriginal Corporation, has seen our students engaging in Anaiwan language lessons, cultural art and craft projects, and time spent on Country at 'Nyabinga Kyuna', outside of Armidale.
The students involved have learnt a lot about themselves, and about Anaiwan and Indigenous culture, and have had a lot of fun during the process.
Thank you to Miss Dixie, Miss Larni, Michelle, and Mr Williams for their involvement and support of our students throughout this program.
Teddy Bears Picnic
The major project for Stage 4 Technology Mandatory classes involved planning and hosting a teddy bear picnic for Kindergarten to Year 4 students and their families. Mr Merrick’s class crafted wooden games, Mrs Upjohn’s class created sock puppets and used them to tell stories, while Mrs Taylor’s class prepared food for the picnic and set up a photo booth.
Lunchtime Sports
Students have been enthusiastically participating in some lunchtime sports competitions. This term it has been predominantly tennis and basketball. The one and only tennis match so far was a short but fun doubles match with one Academy and one Middle School student per team. On those occasions where actual proper basketball teams were not present, they have embraced the ability to form multi-year teams and demonstrated exceptional sportsmanship and teamwork. We look forward to continuing these activities next year (with at least two other sports being suggested by students). Students have also embraced the ability to spectate these matches, supporting their mates and peers brilliantly.
