Year Three/Four News
Science - Friends or Foes?
Students have continued to explore our Science topic, 'Friends or Foes?' We have extended our understanding of how plants grow, investigating flowers, bees and ants.
This week, we wanted to find out what types of foods ants around our classrooms prefer. In the students' collaborative learning teams, they selected a sweet juicy fruit (such as kiwi fruit or mandarins), a dry food (such as dog treats or brown sugar) and a type of seed (such as watermelon or apple seeds). To make sure the test was fair, students made sure equal amounts of foods were included on their card and positioned equally to groups of ants.
Students needed to record each minute how many ants were on each of the food types, taking pictures along the way to document the process. After a long 15 minutes, only the beef jerky dog treat attracted any interest from the ants, with all other food types remaining untouched! We look forward to analysing our observations in our next Science lesson next week.
