Art Show Reflections
In Term 2, leading up to the art show, each class practiced 2 songs (1 whole school & 1 class song, 1 for Preps, 1 for 1s & 2s, 1 for 3s & 4s, and 1 for 5s & 6s) and made lovely art of collages, turmeric leaves and more. Ms Cummings helped us make the art whilst Ms Kellett helped us learn the songs. On the very week that the art show was on, we did our first whole school practice.
For year 6’s fantastic and magical art piece, we drew self portraits like a photo in black and white and collaged them with The Bad Guys books and some turned out weirdly funny and hilarious with all of them having varying designs. For my design I went all over the place, kind of like someone was twitching in and out between different realities of the Bad Guys multiverse. The fine and refined resources we used were A4 watercolour paper, a pencil, a fine liner, The Bad Guy pages, and glue.
In drama class, Ms Kellett taught us the ‘I Am Australian’ song by The Seekers and we learned it in sign language. Then she taught us our class piece. At the start of Term 4, we did the whole school practice of the ‘I am Australian’ and the teachers chose a few people who were doing the best and they gave them a Grill’d voucher. We were all getting better and better each time we practiced. By the time it was the art show we were ready to show everyone what we had been working hard on.
Also for the Art Show, we made a class piece using some of the nature around us like some of the leaves and flowers. We also used turmeric and rubbing alcohol to make a paint to show the intricate details of the plants and flowers. Our first step in the process was to paint the liquid turmeric onto the paper, then we placed the plants and flowers in a design and let them sit in the sun. There is a photosensitive chemical in the turmeric (curcumin) that makes the prints of the plants transfer onto the paper and after we completed that process we just used borax to activate the prints. We then used a fine liner to mark out details on our prints, and gold leaf to highlight it as well.

Adhithi, Harriet & Sophie’s Art Show Reflection
Before the Art Show, we had to put a lot of time into our class piece. We had to go to the secret garden and pick out some flowers and leaves for our art piece, then we painted a turmeric liquid on paper. When that was done and dried, we went over the flowers and leaves with a fine liner and we put “gold leaf” over it to make it pop.
All the people who attend the Sewing Club have been working extremely hard and sacrificing extra break times to create a map of Australia and make lots of Australian animals to put on each state or territory depending on where they were native to. Thank you to the following students for helping make the piece: Elise, Lucy N, Eliana, Alina, Lilly, Abigail, Peter, Tom B, Charlotte, Sienna, Stella, and Sophie.
One of the Year 5 and 6’s artwork was an Australian Stamp. Everyone drew something Australian which took about 2-3 weeks. Before we painted it we had to write the word Australia on it. You could either use a stencil or just write it normally. We also had to put a $1.20 sign on it. Then we could paint it with water colours which took another week. After that we were done we moved on to a possum skin cloak.
Another one of the Year 6’s art pieces was a possum skin cloak. We learned about how the Indigenous people in southern Australia use possum skin cloaks to stay warm, and how they have their life story on their cloaks. We started with a draft on a piece of paper and drew things that we loved and journeys, like our journey to school each day. Later on, we sewed on some finishing touches like pom pom or rainbow string and put a piece of felt onto an item to put something interesting other than just using the thread.
At the Art Show, we had some unfortunate weather and had to do our opening song “I am Australian” in the hall. After the opening, we were all able to show our parents all our amazing artwork that was hung up around the school as a gallery. It was fun.
THE CLASS ARTWORK
For the class artwork, we made a turmeric painting. Tumeric is a spice you can cook with, and if you put it with alcohol or something like hand sanitizer and filter it through, you are left with a kind of dye. If you paint this dye on a piece of paper and then put leaves or flowers on top and leave it in the sun, you will be left with a picture but be careful because the more you leave it in the sun the more it will fade
Performances
At the Art show, each of the classes did a performance of a chosen song. We have all been working on our pieces for ages! Here are the songs we chose.
Both the prep classes did ‘Inanay’ an Aboriginal lullaby originally sung to babies. They all dressed up like Australian animals! The year ones and twos did ‘Home among the Gum Trees’ dressing up in green and brown which are gum tree colours!
The year threes and fours performed ‘Island Home’ dressing up in their amazing Hawaiian outfits! And finally, the year fives and sixes performed ‘Amazing’ and we all dressed up in sparkles!! Everyone had so much fun performing and everyone was so amazing!
FOOD
At the art show, we had very yummy food. We had two trucks one with pizza and one with chips and burgers. Grilled gave us 100 vouchers and teachers were on the lookout for people who were good at the performances and had fun.
Some of the artwork we completed
Some of the artwork we did include making stamps, making a sewn story on fabric, and the class artwork piece. It was a lot of work, but it was really fun too.
Grill'd vouchers
All of the teachers together had over 100 grill'd vouchers to give out to the students that did the best singing in their performances. Everyone tried their best and that is very good.
