Library Fund Donations
Sally and I would like to take this opportunity to thank families that have kindly donated to the Library Fund this year. Many new titles have been purchased for our school library and we have been able to continue building our Book Club and Literature Circle sets.
Due to your generous donations, this year we have also invested money into decodable readers, Dyslexia friendly and Hi Lo books for our struggling and reluctant readers.
What are decodable readers?
Decodable readers are books designed for early or struggling readers that focus on phonics skills. They use simple, controlled vocabulary made up of words that can be "decoded" by applying specific letter-sound patterns and phonetic rules. As readers progress, the complexity of words and sentences gradually increases, helping build reading fluency and confidence.
What makes a book Dyslexia friendly?
A dyslexia-friendly book features accessible fonts (like sans-serif or specially designed dyslexia fonts), wide spacing between lines and words, cream or off-white backgrounds to reduce visual stress, and shorter sentences or chapters to maintain engagement. It often uses clear, structured language and may include visual aids or illustrations to support comprehension.
What are Hi Lo books?
Hi-Lo books are written at a lower reading level but focus on topics that interest older children, such as sports, adventure, and mystery. They benefit struggling readers by using simpler vocabulary, shorter sentences, larger text, and engaging illustrations, while still providing age-appropriate content.
