Year Two - Spotlight on Learning

Dear Families,

We have had another exciting week in Year 2. On Friday we took part in a Smarties Fractions activity. We took 8 smarties out of the box and sorted them by colour. We wrote fractions based on the colours we had. Eg: 3/8 red, 1/8 blue, 2/8 green, 1/8 yellow and 1/8 orange. We displayed these as fractions in our books.

Next week we are learning...

Religious Education: We are continuing our work on Mission Month and looking at the Socktober Fundraiser. We will discuss different ways we can support those less fortunate.

Mathematics: We are learning about Fractions. Students will be exposed to fractions of halves, quarters and eighths. 

English: We will be looking at using the subordinated conjunctions 'since' and 'whenever' in our reading and writing. Our spelling focus is the schwa sound /uh/ which is the most common sound in English, this also relates to our knowledge of syllables. 

Auslan: This week we are learning that some words sound like a noise, like woosh, zoom, squeak and boom and some signs look like parts of an object. Signs that look like the object they represent are called iconic. In this unit we learn signs for farm animals and continue to retrieve and build on our use of depicting signs and colours. We also use our skills of enactment when imitating animal movements.

Social/Emotional Learning & RRRR: We will be continuing our work looking at Positive Gender Relations. Students will also be revising the skills required to take turns and share with others. 

Reminders

Just a reminder that St Thomas is a Sun Smart school and during Term 4 students are required to wear hats. Please ensure students have their name on their hat and remind them of how to take responsibility for their personal belongings. Any student without a hat will be required to sit in the shade during play time and miss out on play. 

We're participating in Socktober for Mission Month to make a difference for children in need in Mongolia. We'll be learning about a community in Mongolia this year and kicking goals to support children. Thanks for supporting our team as we look to make a difference!
