At St Thomas
It has been a busy couple of weeks in STSS across the school. The students have dived right into their new learning topics for Term 4 and are already enjoying lots of hands on activities where they are able to apply their learning.
Foundation - Year 2
The junior school has been learning all about sound and how it travels through vibrations, how we hear it and how different musical instruments make their sounds. They have just starting learning about light, how it travels in a straight line, how different objects allow light to pass through and how other objects can completely block it. In the coming weeks, our students will be conducting more investigations with light and sound and also incorporating Design Technology by participating in fun activities like making Stain Glass windows.
Year 3 - 4
The middle school are well into learning all about heat and what materials are great conductors. Last week, our students conducted an experiment to find out which material conducted heat the best - plastic, metal or wood. The experiments varied in their level of success, which allowed us to have reflective discussions about what would have made the test fairer and more successful.
Year 5 & 6
The senior students having enjoyed learning about light and have started learning about how light behaves. They have learnt about how light is reflected and in the coming weeks will learn about how light refracts and how it is absorbed in some instances. In Week 6, our students will build a light maze which will incorporate aspects the Design Technology curriculum. This will provide a practical way to demonstrate their Scientific understanding of how light can be reflected.
