Year 3/4 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

Students have returned to school after the holidays with lots of stories to share and excitement to be back together at TPS. We have begun new units across all subject areas and are looking forward to our amazing excursion to the Royal Botanical Gardens Victoria! This is for the children to complete our involvement in the project around the 20-year anniversary of the Children’s Garden at the RBG.  3/4 students have been creating signage for the garden, some of which has been printed and placed in the Children’s Garden for all to see.

Maths:

We’ve started the term in Maths by exploring shape. Students examined different properties of 2D and 3D shapes, as we’ve made observations about what shapes have and don’t have in common with each other. We’ve looked at different ways to create 3D symmetry by rearranging shapes slightly. Students have expanded their understanding of trapeziums and shapes that combine to make them. We’ve begun looking at angles by comparing them as either more or less than a right angle and have created shapes following set criteria that have an exact number of internal right angles. Students are developing their ability to identify types of angles as well including obtuse & acute.

Literacy:

In Reading, students have begun researching our new Integrated Focus topic, Beneath Our Feet, which explores the world around us. So far, we have been developing our knowledge of rocks, the rock cycle, different types of soil and how important soil is in our environment. Students are reading non-fiction texts to expand their vocabulary and knowledge in these areas so that they can apply their new knowledge to projects we are doing in class.

In Writing, students have had the opportunity to make a poster or create a comic to communicate their learning about rocks and the rock cycle. This week they are exploring and describing different types of soil and their uses, building on our understanding of how adjectives, noun groups, and verb groups and phrases can be used to make our writing more interesting.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

  • In Writing, students will be writing fictional recounts from the perspective of another person.
  • In Maths, we will be continuing to learn about shapes, angles and developing our knowledge of area and perimeter.
  • In Reading, students will be practising their note taking skills to help support their writing.
  • Friday 25th October, Royal Botanical Gardens Excursion. Please complete permission on Compass.
