Hellenic Culture

At Oakleigh Grammar, celebrating Hellenic culture is at the heart of our School community.  Every year, our School is invited to different events such as commemorations, wreath laying ceremonies, lectures, presentations, exhibitions, competitions and more which are organised by different Greek organisations.

Recently, our students had the privilege of participating in two significant events that honoured Greek history and traditions: a wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service for the hero Theodoros Kolokotronis, as well as the vibrant Antipodes Festival.

Students and staff proudly represented Oakleigh Grammar at the wreath-laying ceremony and memorial service dedicated to Theodoros Kolokotronis, a legendary leader of the Greek War of Independence. This solemn occasion allowed us to reflect on his unwavering dedication to freedom and his lasting impact on Hellenic history. Through our presence, we paid our respects and reinforced the strong connection between our school and Greek heritage.  The event took place on Sunday 9 February at Holy Monastery “AXION ESTIN” in Northcote and it was organised by the Panarcadian Association of Melbourne and Victoria “O KOLOKOTRONIS”.  School Captains Alexander Korlos and Natasha Kaniadakis laid a wreath on behalf of Oakleigh Grammar.

The spirit of Hellenism was also alive at the Antipodes Festival, where a talented group of Oakleigh Grammar students took the stage to perform.  With traditional music, dance, and a passionate display of Greek culture, our students captivated the audience and proudly showcased the skills they have honed through their cultural experience at Oakleigh Grammar. This festival, one of the largest celebrations of Greek culture outside of Greece, provided an incredible platform for our students to share their love for Hellenic traditions with the wider community.

Through these events, Oakleigh Grammar continues to strengthen its commitment to preserving and celebrating Hellenic culture. Whether through honouring historical figures or performing in cultural festivals, our students embrace their heritage with pride and enthusiasm. These experiences not only enrich their understanding of Greek history and traditions but also strengthen their sense of identity and belonging.
