Physical Education

Term 1 Review
In Physical Education this term, the focus has been dominated by teamwork activities as well as the House and District Swimming Carnivals. With students starting the year with many new faces in their classes, Physical Education has centred on teamwork challenges. Working together and communication is at the centre of teamwork and has included several ‘ice breaker’ activities to ensure students move out of their comfort zones and develop wider friendship groups. The emphasis has not been to race other teams but to complete each of the set tasks successfully with increasing levels of difficulty and greater levels of communication.. The Level 1 and 2s have completed team building activities such as ‘Hula hoop huts’ and ‘Chuck the chicken’, while the Level 3-6 have been trying to ‘Cross the river’ or ‘Move the mat’. All activities rely on thinking of what’s best for the team by problem solving and sharing ideas. I encourage parents to discuss with their children the activities covered in P.E. and have them explain some of the strategies they performed.
District Swimming Results
Congratulations to all 28 students who represented the school at the District Swimming Carnival on February 17th at Aquarena. The weather was spectacular, and our students performed strongly against some impressive competition. Doncaster finished 6th out of the 8 teams competing. A special mention to the 9/10 girls freestyle relay which included, Keira 4K, Jasmine 4J, Ruchen 5P and Bella 4J who stormed home to take first place and qualify for Division on March 3rd at Aquanation.
Several students performed particularly well and have also qualified for the Division Carnival including,
Bella 4J from 4J for finishing 2nd in the 9/10 Girls 50m Freestyle A
Keira 4K for finishing 2nd in the 9/10 Girls 50m Backstroke A
Mason 3P for finishing 2nd in the 9/10 Boys 50m Butterfly and 2nd in the 9/10 boys backstroke
Ruchen 5P for finishing 2nd in the 9/10 Girls 50m Breaststroke A
We are extremely proud of all the students who competed at the District event and represented the school so admirably. We wish all of the students well in their upcoming Division races.
Hockey Clinic
Term 1 included a coaching session from the KBH Brumbies Hockey Club. The lesson’s focus was to safely control the hockey stick by holding it correctly and keeping the curved ‘hook’ of the stick on the ground at all times. Students quickly developed their hand eye coordination to enable dribbling the ball by walking slowly before progressing to running and controlling the ball by stopping it using an ‘ice-cream scoop’ action with the stick. The games such as ‘Rob the nest’ and ‘Red light, green light’, were a lot of fun and further developed their teamwork and ball control.
If any parents are interested in their child further developing their hockey skills, they can contact Kirsty Welsman at the KBH Brumbies, which are located at Elgar Park Hockey Ground on Elgar Rd, Mont Albert North VIC 3129.
