From the Classroom

News from The Seniors
In English, we are continuing to read our novel 'Wonder' and looking at text specific vocabulary and their meanings. We have been reviewing the structure of narrative texts and how to engage readers with different types of sentence starters. We have been reviewing sentence structures such as simple, compound and complex sentences and identifying appositives using parts of our novel 'Wonder'.
In Maths, we have been reviewing multiplication and division, exploring the most efficient strategies to solve problems and how to convert remainders into fractions and decimals. We are exploring equations involving multiplication, division, addition and subtraction through worded problems involving multiple steps.
In Inquiry, we are underway in our 'All about me' unit. Students have been learning about healthy and positive choices in our world that influence the way we feel. This includes sleeping patterns, social interactions and fueling our bodies and minds in a positive way. The 5/6s created 'SMART' goals revolving around healthy choices and how we can achieve them.
The 5/6s have begun training in their sport teams for Gala Day. Gala Day will be on Friday the 14th of March which the students are so excited for. If any parents are able to help out on Thursday mornings at 10-11am to assist with training for Softcrosse or Hot shots, please let Sheena or Catherine know. A shoutout to the parents who are already involved in helping during these sessions and to Heathmont Cricket Club for kindly lending equipment for our cricket team in training sessions!
Middle School News
In English, we continue to read Fantastic Mr Fox and delve deeper into character traits and reviewing text specific vocabulary. We are investigating the Narrative structure and how to write different types of sentences to help the reader visualise what is happening.
In Maths, we are reviewing addition and subtraction. We are exploring different strategies (doubles and near doubles and number lines) and determining which are the most effective. We will begin time soon, so it would be great if students could practice reading both analogue and digital times at home.
In Inquiry, we are looking at choices we can make to positively influence our health. Students have investigated healthy foods, healthy friendships and exercises to help our bodies and minds.
Thank you to those parents who have brought in cardboard boxes, we are happy to receive more if you still have them at home.
Juniors Tell All
It has been such a wonderful two weeks in the Junior School! We have settled in beautifully and are enjoying engaging in all our new learning.
We have begun our Inquiry Unit 'All About Me', students have been sharing different aspects of themselves, who they are and their interests. We read 'Our Class is a Family' and created our own class displays where everyone created a self portait and added it to our Class Family displays!
In maths, we have worked on time, where the classes learned the days of the week song and the months of the year macarena, it has been so much fun singing along to our songs while learning! We have also started our Whole Number Unit, where we have been learning counting strategies.
We have been learning how to create a reading community, including how we take care of the belongings in the classroom, how to set up our work books neatly and have enjoyed reading stories class together.
Performing Arts
Wow! What a fantastic beginning to Performing Arts at Marlborough! It has been such a joy to see every student coming in ready to embrace all that this class has to offer!
Last week, students began their Drama Unit, where they have explored characters and how to step into the role of a character. The Senior Classes have begun writing their scripts for their plays entitled 'The Road Trip'. As the term continues, students will engage in learning about creating and acting out plays, learning about story telling and how to use voice and movement to express themselves on stage.
Visual Arts
Just a friendly reminder about Art Smocks for this year. Students will need to bring an art smock to leave in their classroom (usually a tub in your classroom for these) and they will come with students to every Art class. I do have plenty of smocks to borrow in the interim. An old t-shirt or old shirt with cuffs trimmed will suffice.
P.E
Just a friendly reminder to all classes to bring your sun smart MPS hats for Physical Education days and to wear appropriate footwear.
Physical Education lessons are on Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
PMP
PMP started Week 3, Wednesday mornings 10am -11 am and the students were active and engaged. I want to say a big thank you to Beck Trevillian who volunteered her time to assist with the stations. The students were actively involved and participating happily dancing to the music.
Check out the photos.
