It’s been great to see so many of our ASC students getting on board with the Off and Away mobile phone plan! This term, we just want to gently remind everyone about the expectations around mobile phones, smartwatches, earbuds, and headphones before we fully roll it out at the start of Term 2. We know it can be tricky to manage phone use, and we’re hopeful this lead-in period will set everyone up for success. To make things a little clearer, I’ve put together a quick FAQ to explain some details of the plan and the DoE's guidelines for mobile phone use in schools.
1. Can I use my phone before and after the school day? When you get to school, make sure your phone is switched off or on airplane mode and tucked away. You won’t be able to use it until you leave school at the end of the day, even when you're at the bus bay or walking out of the school grounds.
2. What if I need to contact my parent/carer during the school day?
Don't worry—you can always call home through the school office.
3. What if my parent/carer needs to contact me? Your parent or carer can call the school at 67767400. We’ll make sure the message gets to you as soon as possible.
4. I use my phone to purchase food from the canteen. We recommend bringing your EFTPOS/debit card for cashless payments, but you can also always use cash. And if you’re ordering online, it’s best to do it before 9 am at the canteen site.
5. I have a job. How can my employer contact me about work shifts? Let your employer know about the school’s mobile phone policy, and explain they might not get a response until after school hours. You can also suggest they contact you by email if needed.
I hope this helps us all understand how we can be successful at school while limiting our use of phones.
