Sustainability

The Sustainability Leaders are excited to announce the names of our school stick insects! Names were suggested by students in years 3-6, and then the leaders voted on their favourite suggestions.

The names of the stick insects are:

  • Sticklington III
  • Cactus
  • Prickle
  • Mochi

The stick insects are currently living in the Environmental Education classroom so students can see them in their Enviro lessons.

Here is some information about the spiny leaf stick insects:

Spiny leaf stick insects mimic the leaves on which they feed. Females are brown or green and covered with thorn-like spikes for defence and camouflage. Males are smaller, only growing up to 11 cm, and are brown or sometimes pale green. At school we have female stick insects only. Spiny Leaf Insects are herbivores and usually eat gum leaves. Spiny Leaf Insects avoid predators by camouflaging on branches among leaves. When threatened, they arch their tail above their bodies towards the intruder much like a scorpion.
