Specialists Updates and Celebrations

Messages from our Specialist team (P.E., Art, Music, Performing Arts and Environmental Education) and Library...

Performing Arts (Prep)

Prep students have been exploring where dance comes from and the many styles it can produce. From traditional cultural dances to animal-inspired movements, students learned how dance is found all around us, such as in communities, celebrations, and nature. They especially loved creating their own dances based on animals, using movement to express creativity and connection to the world around them!

Environmental Education (Years 1 and 2)

Year 1 and 2 students have begun their new topic on Waste and Recycling. They have learnt about materials like plastic and wood, and then about what waste is. They practised labelling items as "waste" and "not waste" and identified what waste is made of. Next students will learn about where waste goes when we put it in the bin, and which bin we should put waste in!

Visual Arts

The Year 3 and 4 students have officially started their exciting new unit all about paper collage! We began by hearing from a real artist named Max, who runs a cool art collage studio called ‘That Paper Joint’ in Brunswick. We watched a video where Max told us all about how he makes his amazing collages. I was especially excited for the students to hear from Max because Miss Sam and I actually went to That Paper Joint and became art students ourselves! Max has a fun way of making collage—he tells his students to cut, cut, cut lots of interesting paper shapes to build their artwork. He doesn’t even glue the pieces down! Instead, he takes a photo of the collage so he can reuse the paper again. It’s a great way to save paper and reduce waste! This week, the students did their own research into paper collage to get their creative ideas flowing. I can’t wait for next week when we start making our own collages. Great job, everyone!

Physical Education (Year 5 and 6)

This week in Grade 5 and Grade 6, we focused on improving our passing skills in soccer. We started by playing a quick skill game, we had to pass the ball and aim for our partner's cone. Every time we were able to hit the cone, we would gain one point. After, we worked in pairs scoring points each time we passed the ball through a gate to our partner on the opposite side. Finally, we finished with a game of corner ball. We had four teams each protecting one goal, a number would be called out and players who were that number would play in a winner take all game. The player who scored first would gain the point for their team. Well done everyone for a super week of soccer!

Library

In Term 2, Years 1 to 6 visited the library every week. During these sessions 5,202 library books were circulated. The classes who borrowed the most books were:

The top borrowers for each year level:

(There were no top borrowers for Year 1 as borrowing was very even across the year level)

The most popular books were:
