Creating Futures Together
After a semester of innovation, iteration and imagination, our Year 8RISE students have wrapped up the 8 LEGO Drone Challenge — an extended STEM unit as part of Project Class that asked students to stretch both their technical skills and creative thinking.
The challenge? To design and build a LEGO-based structure to mount on a working drone, incorporating a compelling story element while balancing critical engineering considerations such as weight, balance, manoeuvrability, and battery life. It was a task that demanded careful planning, teamwork, and bold ideas — and our students delivered.
The final designs were as diverse as they were inventive! Students refined their creations through testing and feedback, learning how even the smallest design choices could impact the drone’s ability to fly effectively. The unit culminated in an exciting drone race through an obstacle course, where students’ designs were put to the ultimate test.
We’re thrilled to congratulate Olivia W (8E), whose design “BAT” not only featured a sleek and engaging concept but also raced through the course with an impressive winning time of 21.09 seconds!
But the race was just one part of the challenge. Now, we’re inviting the whole school community to get involved by voting for their favourite drone design. We’re incredibly proud of all the students for their persistence, problem-solving and imaginative designs. The 8RISE Project showcased just how powerful STEM learning can be when students are given the time and freedom to explore big ideas — and we can’t wait to see where their thinking takes them next.
