SCHOOL BASED APPRENTICESHIPS/TRAINEESHIPS

A SENIOR SCHOOL OPTION

School Based Apprenticeships (SBATs)/Traineeships is an apprenticeship or traineeship that starts while still completing school.

SBATs allow students to get a head start on their career by combining paid on-the-job training that leads to a qualification while completing a secondary school certificate.

Wheelers Hill Secondary College has a working partnership with HeadStart who consider SBAT expressions of interests, manage the recruitment process and support schools & students throughout their SBAT.

On the 11th June, year 10 students were provided with the opportunity to attend a presentation by HeadStart to learn more about this option.  Presenters Jan Moody & Deb Toone explained the vast number of industries where SBATS could be undertaken.  A list of some of these industries are in the table below:

Ms Moody and Ms Toone highlighted important employability skills that are highly sort after by employers such as being responsible, mature, showing resilience, self-motivation and being organised so that schoolwork, paid work and industry training can be managed.

Prior to being considered for an SBAT, students will need to meet with myself and must complete at least 1-2 weeks of work experience in their interested area.

MEGT - AUSTRALIAN APPRENCTICESHIPS & TRAINEESHIPS

MEGT attended our College to present to your Year 11 & 12 VCEVM students on Monday 16th June to talk all things apprenticeships!  MEGT is a not-for-profit business and supports employers, apprentices, trainees, job seekers and students.

Employers utilise MEGT’s job board to post opportunities in various fields.  I strongly recommend all year 12 VCEVM students who are considering entering an apprenticeship after finishing their studies to register with MEGT and opt in to receive their weekly jobs board!

Georgia Brimacombe from MEGT explained how Australian Apprenticeships worked, the types of apprenticeships available, how to choose an apprenticeship and how to get started applying for opportunities.  One way to decide on which apprenticeship to choose is by visiting the 2024 Occupation Short List.  Here are a few employment areas Georgia highlighted:

Students were also provided with access to MEGTs cover letter and resume templates to help them with developing these documents.  Georgia went on to highlight the importance of ensuring that emails and voice messages were appropriate including “cleaning up” social media accounts as employers do visit these sights to conduct background checks candidates.

If students require further assistance with job applications, they can make a time to see me.
