Ripponlea Excursion

The year 1 and 2 students loved our excursion to the beautiful Ripponlea Estate in Elsternwick. Here are some of our students’ favourite parts of the day….

“I loved doing the servants chores where we had to do the laundry with a long washing stick in a bucket of water. We rinsed the clothes 10 times and then had to hang it on the washing line.”

Ivy – 2C

“At Ripponlea we had a house tour with a guide. They showed us what the two youngest kid’s jobs were - the boy had to work in the stable and the girl would sleep on the floor to make sure all the fires were ready and if they had a ball, she would have to wash all of the dishes before going to sleep! Years ago, the parents were allowed to pick if the children were allowed to talk to them or not!”

Lara – 2B

“I liked the old-fashioned games. There was the egg and spoon race, What’s the time, Mr. Wolf?, croquet and a sack race. And I really liked when we did the Creature Catcher!”

Eddie – 2E

“I liked when we got to wash the clothes like the servants. The teacher threw the wet washing around and it splashed us! I also liked the little kid’s bedroom in the mansion. They had a little cot and they had to go to the toilet in the pot underneath the bed!’

Milla – 2D

“I liked the bit when we had to whack the mat with the rug beater to get all the dirt out of it. The Sargood’s house had a food lift. The scullery maid would put the cooked food in the lift and send it up to the dinner table. And I also liked playing the olden day sports games like the sack race, skipping ropes and croquet.’

Patrick – 2A

‘I loved Creature Catcher. We had search in a big forest garden for animals to colour. The Sargood’s had a poodle dog, frogs, spiders and a horse.”

Rimma – 1D

‘We got to go on a hunt called the Creature Catcher. We had to find all the Sargood’s animals. Our class even saw a beehive up in a big tree in the garden.’

Zoe – 1A

‘I loved the mansion. I got to go into the living room. There was a big staircase and in the living room was a little bell on the wall. The rich people would ring it, and it would ring the servants to do more jobs for them.’

Georgie – 1B

‘I liked the Creature Catcher, the servant’s chores and the old games. It was lots of fun on the bus to the excursion with my friends’.

Chenuli – 1C
