Senior School News

Well done on another jam packed term! Our Year 5 and 6 students have truly demonstrated what it means to be outstanding leaders, consistently leading by example. We are incredibly lucky to have such a remarkable group of senior students at Sacred Heart.

Year 5

Our students wrapped up the term demonstrating impressive leadership, resilience, and dedication. While the Year 6 students were away in Canberra, our Year 5 students stepped up to lead the Feast of the Sacred Heart Day, running all the activities for the rest of the school.

Throughout the day, their teamwork and initiative shone through, giving them a valuable opportunity to showcase their leadership. As we begin Semester 2, teachers will be keeping a close eye on our Year 5 students as they prepare for their leadership speeches and roles toward the end of the year. It’s fantastic to see so many students embracing these opportunities to lead and contribute to our school community.

Fernhill Visits

Next term, our Year 5 students will be visiting Fernhill to spend meaningful time with the residents across the road. During these visits, students will engage in interactive games, share stories, and read with the residents, building connections across generations.

Year 5 Class Sport on Tuesdays

                P.E --> Thursday

Canberra

On Tuesday the 24th of June, the Grade 6s had a guided tour of Parliament House. We participated in a roleplay in the chamber where laws are made, which was a lot of fun. We also explored the architecture of the sophisticated building and learned that it cost $1.1 billion to build Parliament House, compared to $600,000 for the old Parliament House.

The highlight of the day for everyone was meeting Tim Wilson, our representative for Goldstein. He answered our questions and let us take photos with him. We are so grateful for the opportunity to visit Parliament House, it really meant a lot to us.

On Tuesday the 24th of June, the Grade 6s went to the War Memorial to honour those who served before us. Before our tour, the school captains led a wreath-laying ceremony and a prayer called We Will Remember Them to pay our respects to those who died in war.

We then split into groups, each with a tour guide who showed us around. We visited the Wall of Remembrance, a wall of poppies acknowledging those who fought in wars, and viewed dioramas depicting actual war scenes, which we found really interesting. The tour guides shared various stories about the wars and the people affected by them.

We are so incredibly grateful for the opportunity to remember and honour the soldiers who fought for our country.

Year Six was off to Questacon with smiles on our faces. Once we arrived, we were led into the first room, and the fun began! There were activities like sitting on a chair and pulling yourself up, and another where you had to throw a dog ball attached to a wire to hit a red ball.

The next room was really exciting because it had an earthquake simulation, it was so much fun! They even had the ABC News weather reporter playing on a TV in the room.

After that, we headed to the room with the famous drop slide. It was amazing! You had to wait three seconds before dropping straight down.

We really appreciated this opportunity and would like to thank all the teachers who made it possible.

A couple of the camp beauty queens

On Wednesday the 25th of June, the Year 6s went to the Australian Institute of Sport.

We arrived a bit early and had the chance to visit the shop, where everything had “AIS” written on it. That didn’t stop me from buying a mini footy, a mini cricket bat, and a soft cricket ball.

About 20 minutes later, our tour began. After a short walk, we arrived at our first room, which had an ice rink. After about five minutes of talking, we moved on to the second room, which featured volleyball. There were athletes training, so we stayed longer to watch. The players even waved to us! After around 25 minutes, we headed to the third room, the gym, where we saw some athletes recovering from injuries. We stayed there for about 10 minutes.

In the fourth room, called the Combat Centre, we saw four different combat sports. After a short talk, we went to the fifth room, the basketball court. Our guide told us that the players had to make 1,500 shots a week! Some players were practicing while we watched for a few minutes.

Before heading to our final room, we did a challenge: how many star jumps can you do in two minutes.

After the challenge, we arrived at our last stop, the swimming centre. After spending a few minutes there, we wrapped up the tour and headed back.

Parliment and Civics Rebate

Dear Parents,

Students from Grade 6 recently attended an educational camp in Canberra from the 23rd to the 26th of June. During the camp, students participated in a range of programs focused on Australian Government and Parliament during the day, along with fun, team-based activities in the evenings.  The activities they participated in were

  • Australian War Memorial
  • National Capital Exhibition
  • Parliament House
  • Canberra International Sports & Aquatic Centre (CISAC)
  • Electoral Education Centre
  • High court Australia
  • National Gallery of Australia
  •  Australian Institute of sport
  • Royal Australian Mint
  •  Questacon

To assist families in meeting the cost of the excursion the Australian Government is contributing funding to our school in the amount of $45 per student under the Parliament and Civics Education Rebate program towards those costs. The rebate is paid directly to the school upon completion of the excursion.

Have a wonderful break
