Deputy News

We are wholeheartedly dedicated to supporting the whole child, academically, socially, and emotionally because these are the reasons we come to school each day. With recent data revealing a decline in literacy outcomes, now is a crucial time to reflect on how we can better support all students to not only succeed but truly excel. While some students may thrive regardless of the instruction they receive, we have a responsibility to provide every learner with high-quality teaching and timely, targeted support.

Nationally, NAPLAN data has highlighted a decline in writing achievement, with many Year 9 students demonstrating skills more typical of Year 4. This trend underscores the urgency for a renewed focus on writing instruction.

Almost three years ago at Sacred Heart, we identified a concerning downward trend in our own writing data, particularly in NAPLAN results. Determined to improve student outcomes in writing, spelling, grammar, and punctuation, we adopted an evidence-based approach known as The Writing Revolution (TWR). This method emphasises explicit, structured instruction beginning at the sentence level. It supports writing development across all subject areas while strengthening students’ ability to think and communicate with clarity.

We are proud to have recognised this need early in 2022 and to have implemented leadership-driven changes that continue to positively impact both teaching and learning. In 2025, we are excited to celebrate a clear upward trend in our writing, spelling, punctuation, and grammar data most notably within our Year 3 cohort, who have experienced the full benefit of consistent, sentence-level instruction.

To support this work, we adopted a Multi-Tiered System of Supports (MTSS) a proactive and inclusive framework that replaces the outdated “wait-to-fail” model with a focus on prevention and early intervention. MTSS combines evidence-based teaching, universal screening, and ongoing progress monitoring to ensure students receive the right level of support when they need it whether through whole-class instruction (Tier 1), small group teaching (Tier 2), or individualised intervention (Tier 3).

Implementing MTSS at Sacred Heart has required time, thoughtful planning, and a collective commitment from staff. However, the benefits have been significant. Through a coordinated, school-wide approach, we have lifted literacy outcomes and fostered a culture where every learner feels supported to reach their full potential.

At the heart of MTSS is the belief that all students can achieve grade-level expectations when provided with the right instruction and supports. This essential piece of our puzzle marks an important step toward achieving long-term, sustainable change within our school community.

Wishing you all a fabulous break
