What's Happening In Grade 6

Welcome to Term 3! 

This term, the Grade 6 students will be exploring the following areas.  

English

Students will be learning about the structure of information texts and will be composing information reports with topic sentences subheadings and learning about the importance of visual literacy.  Students will be researching scientists whose inventions or discoveries changed the world such as Marie Curie, Alexander Fleming and Jonas Salk.  Novel studies will continue for the literature component of the reading program. We will be reading ‘Danny the Champion of the World by Roald Dahl.  The novel explores several key themes, primarily focusing on the strong bond between a father and son, resourcefulness and contentment.  

Students will also be exploring explanation texts and will learn about the structure and purpose of explanation texts as they read about how things work.  Students will write their own explanation texts using time connectives, causal language, conjunctions and complex sentences. 

Mathematics

The Grade 6 students will begin working on LAF (Learning and Assessment Framework) activities which aim to support multiplicative thinking. Alongside the activities in LAF, students will be using the formula for the area of a rectangle and will use it to solve practical problems.  They will make connections between length, perimeter and area. They will explore the four quadrants of the cartesian plane and use positive and negative numbers. Two workshops which aim to build financial literacy skills are also planned this term.

Inquiry This term our Inquiry topic is Physical and Chemical Science. Students will conduct experiments and write scientific reports to document their experiments.  The students will showcase their learning in Inquiry by researching a famous scientist of their choice whose invention or research has made a considerable impact on us. Finally, the students will choose a science based song and contribute their ideas for the choreography of the song which they will perform at our whole school ‘Production Event’ on Thursday 11th of September.
