Principal Update

Sarah Rose, Principal

I've no doubt that everyone is well and truly ready for a break from routine after another 11-week term and quite a harsh start to winter.  We've certainly been busy across the whole school right to the end of this term.

In recent weeks, our Year 11 and Year 10 students have sat their semester exams, and I'm really pleased with how they approached this important experience.  While it is one element of assessing the knowledge they've attained over the course of the semester, it is also great preparation for Year 12 examinations.

This week we've had the absolute pleasure of welcoming grade 5 students and teachers from our local primary schools to spend a day experiencing secondary schooling. We offer this experience to all grade 5 students, whether they're planning on coming to GSC or not, as we see us playing an important role in supporting the broader transition process from primary to secondary school for these young students and families in our community.

You may have seen our Year 10 students out and about in the workforce this week as they undertake their formal work experience placements.  This is always a hugely valuable experience for these students as they get a real-world feel for a potential career.  We extend our sincere thanks to all the businesses and organisations that have taken on a student for the week, as this experience paves the way for their subject and career path choices.  You can read more about it later in this edition (and see some images from some of the placements).

Looking ahead to next term, we will embark on the creation of our 2026 timetable.  A key element of this process is students undertaking course advising and subject selection.  As you will see advertised later in this edition, we are holding our Course Advising and Subject Expo Evening on Thursday 31st July and then course advising sessions for varying year levels from the 6th to the 8th of August.  Students and families to whom these events apply will receive more detailed communication next term, so please keep an eye out for these.

Over the term break NAIDOC Week will be celebrated from the 6th to 13th July.  Local celebration events and activities are included in the Community News section of this edition, and as a school, we will acknowledge NAIDOC Week upon our return to school at our whole-school assembly in Week 3.

Other events to look out for in term 3 are the next set of Family Kitchen Workshops scheduled in late August (see flyer later in this edition for details), and our Production shows for 2025 of Into The Woods.

Semester 1 2025 reports went live yesterday for parents and carers to access via Compass.  Please refer to the Compass News post for further information.  Wishing everyone a safe and rejuvenating term break.

Kind Regards,

Sarah Rose

Principal

PRODUCTION

Tickets for our 2025 production of Into The Woods are now on sale!

“Be careful what you wish for” seems to be the ongoing theme in Stephen Sondheim and James Lapine’s Brothers Grimm inspired musical, Into the Woods. The story follows The Baker and his wife who wish to have a child, Cinderella who wishes to go the King’s Festival, and Jack who wishes his cow would give some milk. When the Baker and his wife are visited by the neighbourhood witch, who reveals to them that she placed a curse on their family, the two set off on a journey into the woods to reverse the curse. Also in the woods, we meet Little Red, who is trying to visit her grandmother, the Wolf who loves tasty little girls, the Witch’s daughter Rapunzel, and the Princes chasing after their loves. By the end of Act I, everyone has gotten their wish and will seemingly live happily ever after. But in Act II, when Jack’s beanstalk brings them a visit from an angry Giant, we see how the consequences of their actions haunt them in disastrous ways. The community must come together to save each other and their kingdom, but sacrifices must be made.
