CENTRAL AUSTRALIA CAMP

Year 9 & 10 Central Australia Trip – 2025

From the 21st to the 28th of June, a group of 39 Year 9 and 10 students embarked on an unforgettable journey through the heart of Australia—an experience that, for many, will remain a once-in-a-lifetime adventure.

The trip began bright and early at 5:00 am in Torquay. Despite the early start, spirits were high, and excitement buzzed as the students looked ahead to the days to come.

Our first destination was Adelaide. Though our time there was brief, we were treated to a vibrant sunset over Spencer Gulf before meeting our camp chef, Marni, who kicked off the culinary journey with a delicious pasta meal and dessert.

On day two, we passed through Port Augusta en route to Coober Pedy. There, we toured the iconic opal mining town, exploring an old underground mine and even experiencing a night’s stay below the surface—an exciting and unique experience for all.

On Monday the 23rd, after over 25 hours of travel, we arrived at Yulara, the gateway to Uluru. That evening, we watched in awe as Uluru changed colour with the setting sun—shifting from brilliant reds and oranges to deep browns—a breathtaking moment shared with tourists from around the world.

The following day began with a visit to the Uluru Cultural Centre, followed by a guided walk around the rock. Students had the chance to take in Uluru’s striking red hues set against the vivid blues and greens of the surrounding landscape. In the afternoon, we headed to Kata Tjuta and hiked the 7-kilometre Valley of the Winds circuit. The panoramic views from the trail gave us a true sense of the size and majesty of these ancient rock formations.

On the 24th of June, we concluded our stay in Yulara with a visit to a local camel farm before making our way to Kings Canyon in Watarrka National Park—a four-hour drive that proved well worth the journey. For many, Kings Canyon was the highlight of the trip. Its steep cliffs, vibrant colours, and hidden oasis of prehistoric ferns offered an awe-inspiring 7-kilometre hike that was both challenging and deeply rewarding.

From Watarrka, we travelled to Alice Springs for the final leg of our journey. During our stay, we explored the Alice Springs Desert Park, where students enjoyed a stunning nocturnal exhibit showcasing the desert’s vibrant after-dark ecosystem. A thrilling bird show added even more excitement to the experience.

We also visited the Royal Flying Doctor Service and the School of the Air, gaining valuable insights into the challenges of remote life in Australia and the innovative solutions that support these communities.

The Central Australia Trip was a remarkable journey filled with breathtaking landscapes, cultural discovery, and unforgettable moments. From the vivid sunsets over Spencer Gulf to the towering cliffs of Kings Canyon and the fascinating exhibits in Alice Springs, every stop offered something new and inspiring. More than just a travel experience, the trip fostered resilience, curiosity, and lasting friendships—leaving memories that will be cherished for years to come.
