Student Reflections

Our year 7 and 8 Humanities students were invited to reflect on their learning from the year using a medium of their choice. Here is what they created.
The Perfect Day - Written by Stefanie Stanisic
What begins as routine household chores and quiet moments quickly turns chaotic when unexpected events involving the children erupt, leaving the narrator shocked and emotionally shaken. The poem reflects the fragility of calm and the abrupt intrusion of panic into everyday life.
Freedom of Speech - Written by Dinadi Nanayakkara
This piece examines the role of freedom of speech in relation to Australia Day protests, highlighting how non-violent protests effectively raise awareness and advocate for change. It explores the historical and ongoing significance of January 26th, contrasting Australia Day celebrations with the experiences of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, for whom the day marks colonisation, loss of land, and cultural trauma. The piece discusses the debate over changing the date, presenting arguments from both perspectives, and emphasises the importance of respecting Indigenous voices. Overall, it demonstrates how protest and public discourse serve as vital tools in promoting understanding, equality, and reconciliation in Australia.
The Stolen Generation - Written by Adam
The poem poignantly captures the experience of a child taken from their family, exploring feelings of loss, fear, and longing. Despite being placed in an unfamiliar home with a new identity, the narrator’s love for their parents remains alive, symbolized as an enduring “flame.” Through memories and dreams, the poem reflects resilience and hope, emphasizing the unbreakable bond between parent and child and the determination to one day be reunited.
